Thyroid Medication

So I gained a ton of weight over the course of a year (rapidly and I couldn't seem to lose any) so my doctor tested my thyroid. She decided to put me on a low dose of Synthroid since my levels were a little off. It's been two months and I have gained about 5 more pounds! I am careful about what I eat (without actually dieting). Has anyone else experienced this? Other than the extra weight, it seems to be working for my exhaustion, moods, etc. What should I do?
Additional info: I am not on any other medications.

What can I do next?

Becky, I am going through the samething right now. I had 2 pregnancies back to back so my OB was treating my thyroid issues (he was the one who tested and discovered the problem). I have since started seeing and Endocrinologist, they specialize in this area. Its been a year since my last pregnancy and we are still tweeking my meds. I would recommend you see a specialist if you aren't already. It does take time to find correct dosages etc. I go this week & hope we can tweek it again! good luck

Maybe you should see an endocrinoligist? I have heard that it can be tricky to get the right levels of thyroid med. so a specialist might be able to help.

Good luck to you.

You may need to have another blood test to check on whether your Synthroid dosage is correct. I am also on Synthroid, and when I first started taking it, I had to have tests done every couple of months and my endocrinologist would then adjust my dosage level. It took several tries to find the right dosage - hang in there.

It sounds like your medication needs adjusted - maybe your dosage increased. I know they say sometimes there is a delay with the levels in the bloodstream (sometimes they appear normal, but aren't)My sister and mother have this problem and their mediaction needs adjusting. I have a thyroid problem also (I started on a very high dose because my levels were so high) and right away I felt better, and lost like 15 lbs - I was happy, but that was it! I still have a little more to lose, but it is definately alot harder! Good Luck.

I take a low dose of synthroid also. It can take over 6 weeks for it to take full effect. At 6 weeks, my doctor called me back in to check my blood again to make sure that the amount she prescribed was good and I ended up getting a slightly larger dose. 6 weeks later checked again and it was fine. Shortly after that the weight started changing. Good luck!

I was diagnosed with hypothyroid over 10 years ago and started Synthroid also. I had gained almost 30 lbs and needed to lose it because I was getting married. I started the Synthroid in Dec. and joined Weight Watchers in the spring. I lost all the weight in 3 months after staring WW and have kept if off for 10 years. Once they get your dose right, which can take up to 6 months, you should start losing pretty easily. Hang in there!

do you take a multivitamin? i learned from the endocrinologist you are not to take a multivitamin with 4 hours of your thyroid medication and also not to eat for 1 hour before or after taking it. this has really helped my thyroid level. good luck.

HI Becky, I have been taking synthroid for over a year now with no weight gain. Don't stop taking your medicine. I suffered for years with exhaustion, moods etc...begging my doctors to tell me why. They told me it was all in my head, part of being a mom of three active kids....etc. Finally I was diagnosed as diabetic, I have a great, young agressive Endo that decided that my "boarder-line" test result wasn't good enough and ordered more tests. You can't imagine my relief when she told me I had a thyroid problem and that was why I was exhausted all the time, moody, etc (yeah the diabetes didn't help there either!). Just getting the meds isn't the end of getting better, it's the beginning. Getting outside in the fresh air, getting active, and realizing that you need to take time for yourself will help alot. Don't worry about the dusting too much...play, ride bikes, build snowmen, and enjoy your kids and the weight will take care of it's self. Life and childhood are too short! Enjoy it all! Best wishes.
