So, Our son will be 15 mo tomorrow and I was wondering what is a good age to upgrade them to a toddler bed. And also what are the signs to know that he's ready? Thanks in advance! ~C.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice. We decided to keep him in his crib until he starts showing that he is jusy dying to get out. I agree that the freedom he would acquire may be too much for him and also us as well!! Thank you all again!!

Our son's dr told me at his 18M check-up to leave him in there as long as he isn't trying to get out. At 2 1/2, he was still content in the crib, but we wanted to make the transition. He's 3 1/2 now and I swear he would still sleep in a crib if we let him.

Son #2 is 18M and climbs on EVERYTHING. I think he'll be moved way before his older brother. But, he hasn't tried yet - so he's staying in there. It's safer and less of a hassle.

In my experience, a major sign of readiness is when he starts to at least try to climb out of the crib. My kids transitioned to a big bed right after turning 2, I believe. At that time we were also potty-training, so that was another factor--they needed to be able to get up and go potty, which they couldn't do in a crib.

I personally never used toddler beds; we went from crib to twin beds. I start out by putting the box spring and mattress flat on the floor, and then as they get accomplished in the bed, put up the frame.

My suggestion is to keep him in his crib until he is either jumping out or you need it for a 2nd child. It's a huge transition and you won't sleep well for a while. Good luck!

Unless you have a strong and compelling reason to move him, I would keep him in his crib. Once you move him, you will invite disruption to the sleep routine that you've worked hard to develop over the last 15 months. 15 months just seems too young....in my opinion.

My son is going to be 3 next week and his toddler bed it on its way. He know how to climb out of his crib and before would only do it during the day, but for the last 2 weeks he has been climbing out every night and trying to climb into bed with us. I kept him in the crib until know because I worry more that he will fall out or get hurt during the night. I would change up until he starts climbing out.

Hi My advice would be to keep him in his crib as long as possible. this is the advice that i was given by my ped. and i took it thank god. because even when we did get her into a reg. bed there were sleep issues for a while because she didnt want to stay in bed. the freedom is too much for a 15 month old and i would worry about what they might get into if they wake in the middle of the night. good luck

they say 1 1/2 to 2 is a good age but both my kids went into big boy beds at 15 months. if they stay in one spot for nap. try them sleeping on your bed to see how the do for a nap. the also have beds that have like a side likes kinda like a crib rail but doesnt go down the hole side of the bed. hope this helps

At 14 months my son HATED his crib. He would scream, thrash, and try to climb out everytime we put him in there.

So...we out him in a toddler bed.

After 5 months, he hated the toddler bed. He was constantly falling out. (He sleeps sideways).

Now, he is a King in a full sized bed. He loves it.

Hi C.! I have a daughter and a son. My daughter was in her crib for a long time and loved the security of it. My son was in a big boy bed by the time he was 10 months old. I took it down the day I found him hanging from his feet that got caught while he was trying to climb out. So I would say, if he is happy leave him in a crib, but if he is trying to climb out, take him out before he hurts himself.

Just be prepared for him to mobile! It is always a surprise!! LOL! Good luck! R.

There's no reason to move him to a bed unless he shows signs of wanting to get out of the crib. When he can get out of the crib is when you should move him to a bed. Keep in mind that when you move him to a bed you open up a new world of possibilities for him: free roaming around his room, the ability to roam the house, the ability to get out of bed the minute you put him down for sleep or nap. While I am not trying to discourage you from making the move, you should definitely ask yourself if your son is ready for this level of freedom and if you're ready for this (albeit temporary) level of constant vigilance.

My son just turned 2 and is showing interest in a big boy bed. He still sleeps great in his crib and can't climb out of it. I always thought you should leave kids in the crib until they can climb out, or whenever they get too big for it. I am enjoying the peace of mind that my son is not up roaming the house in the middle of the night, and am waiting a few more months before I get him the big bed. Good luck!
