Hi all,
I am 20 weeks pregnant with my second child and I'm experiencing the numbing of my hands and tingling in my fingers. Sometimes its achy and painful. I had the same thing for the first pregnancy that got worse as my pregnancy progressed and had to wear braces on both my hands as well as sleep upright with a number of wedges and pillows so that my hands could fall by my wayside so that I would not lose circulation while I slept. I'm trying to avoid all that this time and was wondering if any of you experienced this and had any success in any sort of treatments for it. I'm willing to try anything.

I had this also with all 3 pregnancies, it got worse each time. Even a year after my youngest child's birth I still get it every once in awhile. I did not find anything that helped other than elevating my hands while I slept but I wanted you to know you aren't the only one! Hopefully it will go away soon and good luck!

Chiropractic worked for me with ALL of my pregnancies for those symptoms and for my low back pain and sciatica....when on to deliver all babies naturally.

Sounds exactly like carpal tunnel syndrome. I would strongly urge you to ask your primary care physician for a referral to a neurologist to get tested.
I had the same as you - shooting pain, tingling, numbness that surfaced during pregnancy, and was surprised to get the diagnosis b/c I thought it was only people who type on computers all day that get it ;-) Be sure you are not dehydrated either, as that makes it alot worse. The pain will likely get worse as you get further along (due to extra weight and fluid retention) but there are alot of lifestyle changes and hand exercises that you can do to manage the pain. A neurologist will definitely be able to help you. You can't really avoid the braces at night, atleast I wasn't able to. But I got used to it and hopefully you will too. Good luck and I hope you get a diagnosis soon.

I had something similar and my doctor explained that my very enlarged breasts were actually cutting off circulation to my arms and fingers, especially when laying down sleeping. She didn't really say there was much for me to do, but to reposition myself as much as possible during the night just to get the blood flowing again. Speak with your doc to rule out any unnecessary carpal tunnel prevention extremes.

It sounds like carpal tunnel to me too. I had it with my first pregnancy and it lasted for a few months after my son was born. I had to wear a brace too and would almost drop my son while putting him in his crib sometimes. I'm not sure what natural remedies are out there other than the brace, but definitely look into it. (I didn't have any symptoms of it with my second and I didn't retain nearly as much fluids with him either). Stay hydrated! Talk to your doctor and congratulations on your upcoming new little bundle!

I had the same thing with both my pregnancies. I wore wrist braces at night and that worked for me. Talk to your OBGYN and maybe he/she can offer some more solutions. Good luck!

Hi
sounds like pressure on nerves from your changing body. Stretching alot will help. Different positions whle sleeping and dont stay in the same position for too long. Walking helps too. try to stay limber!

normal.

I had it too. And after I gave birth it became so bad that at times I couldn't hold my baby (thank gos for slings!)

Everything returned to normal after my child was about 4 months old, and my hormones returned to normal!
