To Add Another Kitty or Not?

Thinking of adding another cat to the mix. I think that T (the youngest of my two cats) would really like someone to play with and to love and honestly the other cat (K) is just not interested in having that kind of relationship with him.

We play with him daily and both cats gets quite a bit of attention, however T is still a little manic like, gets VERY hyper, attacks his tail and kind of goes beserk. :-)

My biggest concern is that either none of the cats would get along and the cat disagreements would multiply OR that T and the new kitty would gang up on K and make his life totally miserable...this of course would be unacceptable.

T has a pretty good relationship with one of the dogs but they don't snuggle and the dog doesn't ever really groom T, T does all the grooming.

We had a VERY Small kitten for about 24 hours, showed up as a stray about a 7 months ago, my husband had a fit so I found a home for her. However, during the very short time that we had her T was already starting to bond with her...grooming and snuggling with her and playing with her (gently). Hubby has NOW decided that another kitty wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Any opinions on this dilema??

What can I do next?

i think that if YOU want another cat you should get one. getting one to entertain one of your current ones is just a crapshoot. like having another kid because you're afraid your only is lonely. you just don't know if the personalities will mix, and then you're stuck with a bunch who don't get along.

My vet says that the younger the kitty, the more likely it is to be accepted by an older cat.

I used to take in whatever cats God sent our way, put them together, and say, "Now, you all had better get along!" And, for the most part, they did! (I still do that, to a lesser extent.) The one major problem was the time when we took in an older male cat, and our oldest female cat got territorial.

On the other hand, that SAME female cat (now 17 years old) was found as a four-week-old kitten, too young to be separated from her mama. Our three-year-old cat (at that time) absolutely welcomed her in, took care of her, and played with her - they were best friends for years, until he passed away.

If you adopt through a rescue agency, you'll find that some agencies evaluate their foster cats and can tell you whether they'll probably fit well into a home with another cat already there. You can pick their brains about your other concerns, too.

Three cats is do-able. Anything over three verges on crazy cat lady.

You can try it, but with cats, especially, you can never guarantee that they will bond, or play, or even like each other. My two cats have completely different personalities, but they roughhouse together like dogs, tearing around the house and tussling and tumbling on the carpet. It's hilarious.

So...it might be successful, and it might not. Good luck.

Animals are funny- My sister pet sit two kittens last June and Logan, who was only about 8 months old, HATED them. She would not go near them, and the one attempt I had to get her to play with them she poofed her tail real big and ran away.
That said, she adores my dogs and my other cats. She plays with all of them, chasing their tails, jumping on them, scaring them, just in general being a sweety to them.
Maybe try a fostering program so you can gauge how well T and the new kitten will get along? He sounds like a sweet heart though so I don't think you'll have a lot of problem finding a kitten to get along with him.

Don't get another cat. Unless you are trying out for that TV show where the animals have taken over the house.

Good luck to you and yours.
