A.K.
Sounds like just a cold at this point. I don't think the Dr would do anything for him based on the symptoms you described. Of course you are his best expert though!
Hi Moms - I'm sure everyone's asking questions like this. My little guy got a stuffy/runny nose yesterday and a cough. No fever yesterday or today, and the runny nose seems to only be white, not green. He's super whiney, clingly, listless, etc. He does occassionally get ear infections (not frequently, but sometimes). He had VERY minor pneumonia at around 1.5 years old (he's 3 today - bummer of a birthday present), so I'm paranoid about coughs even though he's never had a recurrance of that.
We're in TX, so spring has sprung and there is pollen EVERYWHERE. He also started going to in home childcare last week - didn't notice any other kids with sniffles, though.
Any suggestions to ease his discomfort are appreciated, also.
Should I take him to the pediatrician (they have an after hours pediatric place near here) or just make him comfy and keep him home? I did leave a message with them as well, but wanted some mommy feedback. Thanks!
Still no fever, but green nose mucus is showing up - he's been up since 6:30-7am this morning; the pedi has said before that early morning mucus is sometimes green - but this is 4 hours later. I think it might be sinus infection. Gonna give it another hour to see if the green goes away, but it looks like a trip to the pedi - sigh! Am I overreacting? I think the green is a "go to doc" signal even without a fever... I'm gonna call them just to be sure.

Good chance it's allergies (which can turn into a sinus infection.) I wouldn't necessarily go to the doc, but follow your instincts. One thing I would do is add a teaspoon of local honey and/or bee pollen, every day. Local=honey made within 25 miles of your home. It helps my sinus/allergy problems and my kid's allergies.. Georgia has toxic pollen. In my experience, the docs office will either overkill a simple allergy with drowsy benadryl or give an antibiotic where one isn't needed. Try some natural stuff, cut all sugar out of his diet (except for the honey.) Allergies are at heart an immune system response. Sugar immobilizes immunity. Hang in there.
Hello,
When congestion is at hand, my solution is to put vicks on my chest. Mucous gets in the chest and caused the pneumonia. Another way is to have a humidifyer, or any kind of hot steam to eliminate that mucus. I see ads all the time for mucinex. I am not sure the age level. Maybe teach your son to blow his nose the minute the mucus is back. Some say dirt in the air can cause mucus. Maybe your pediatrician can give you antibiotics to clear his nose. Good luck, G.
P.,
I think you can just like it ride out cuz it is not that bad as you describe he is having and there is some med for his age but as for the cough if it is that bad then you could see the doctors. Spring time does produce many pollen but just do the best you can with him... good luck
Go to www.iherb.com and order Viburcol drops. It is an immune booster for babies. It works very well for colds and allergies. Alot of parents I know say it works phenominally. We carry it in my office, and I can't keep it on the shelves, it sells so fast!
hi
An allergist told me once that it's believed by some docs that when a child gets pneumonia at such a year age, it might actually be childhood asthma.. which can be very mild to extreme (my son had the mild version) with that said, has your doctor checked for that? additionally, dust mites are possibly a culprit, especially when no sign of fever but a continual runny nose..
it's something worth considering. if you go online, you can read abou dustmite symtoms and how to "arm" your house against them..
also, IF although it;s too early to really tell if pollen if a problem, however If you notice that it is.. keep in mind.. pollen sticks to hair and clothing.. often people don't realize that and on a high pollen day, they go out and come back inside WITHOUT washing their hair OR changing clothes or their pillow cases (where it can also linger) not too mention IF you have pets.. pollen will attach itself to that.. sometimes people think they are allergic to the pet itself, when turns out.. it's rather what the pet dragged in on their fur.... so it's just as important to clean ones pet ..
best of luck
If there's no fever, I would just wait it out. Get saline spray and and keep him hydrated, so he can shed the mucus easily.
Our pediatrician really only wants to see us in case of a high fever (>102) or if a low grade fever doesn't resolve after 3 days.
You can call the nurse line if you are in doubt.
get some vicks(there is even a baby version)and rub it on chest, back and even rubbing on feet and putting socks on over that will help. also, use humidifier and i would try to buy some kind of syrup(med) to dry the congestion up this always helps my son.
Is he getting his 3 year molars?
Ugh, green pollen is everywhere down here.
No fever? Sounds like allergies.
You may want to see if there is any over counter meds you can give him just for today. Ask the pharmacist. Also we had to invest in a really good air filter for, our daughters room when she was young. We had to change the filter every 3 weeks when it was bad oitside with pollen and every 4 weeks all the rest of the year..
Sounds like he'll be fine with a dose of momma. At 3, they can ride out a lot more than they can as babies. I think the only thing to worry about might be strep? It can present without the traditional fever and really sore throat. Take a flashlight and check the back of his throat for red/white rash.
Definitely could be allergies too. We have wondered on and off if our youngest has seasonal allergies because he gets watery eyes, clear runny nose and a tickled throat this time of year.
