To Sunroof or Not to Sunroof?

I am in the process of a new car decision. It seems what is available local comes down to 2 options. Sun roof or no sunroof. For those of you that have a sunroof in your vehicle, How often do you really use it? Is it more of just a novelty? Have you had leak issues?
Thanks

This is funny. I live in Texas, and when I had a sunroof, I always used mine. :)

I'm always freezing, and I loved having the heat and sunshine coming in! I also agree with the others; my sunroof never leaked. I enjoyed having the sunroof, but I don't really miss it. Now I must always have heated seats. ;)

I use mine just about every day, even in the winter (it can be vented). I hate stale air.

Never had a leak issue, but then again, my car is a 2009, so I guess there's still time for that.

ETA: When we are out of town and have to rent a car, if it doesn't have a sunroof I feel claustrophobic.

Sun Roof.
We use it on nice days (not super hot days) and the kids LOVE it too.
Never has leaked (yet)

I believe once you go with a sun roof, you never go back.

If you have the option, I would opt for auto start (I'd never buy anothe car without that option) and if you get them to install it - even better!!!

We are in Texas.

We have 2 cars with sunroof, use a lot and never any issues. It is great for cooling the car down if it has been parked outside.

Daughter has to park hers at school so she uses it in the afternoons especially to cool her car down. Daughter's car was to be the convertible option but since we knew she would get that car, we opted for the sunroof because we thought it would be safer than a convertible for a teen.

When she got my car with sunroof, I got upgraded to a convertible and I have the top down every chance I get. Even if it is cooler outside, I'll have the top down and heat blasting, or if it is blazing hot, I still have cold air blowing on my face.

We've had no issues whatsoever with any of our cars but we shouldn't due to the manufacturer and the warranties on them.

I vote do it!! I have long hair and I just keep a clippie in the car for my hair.

ETA: @ Angela... your are SO correct. We love the heated seats. My car has the cool seats as well. LOVE the butt warmers on cold days!

We are in Texas and several of our cars had sunroofs. LOVE THEM. Did have leaks but not hard to fix. Generally it was the drain that got plugged. Have one in my Acura now and I have the sucker open all the time with the AC cranked up if its hot. Hubby just bought a new F150 without the sunroof. I miss it! However, the back window does slide open so that is something. Go for it!!!

I LOVE my sunroof and I use it all the time. Even in winter, I keep the shade open (roof closed of course) to let the sun in. Spring-Fall, I keep it open almost all of the time. The only time I don't keep it open is long-haul highway driving, because after about 30 minutes or so at highway speeds, the noise gets to be a little much. But even today (I'm in Pittsburgh too) I had mine open, and yesterday.

In early spring and late fall when it is cool, I even open the sunroof and put the heat on my feet just to get the fresh air.

Ever since I got one in a car about 10 years ago, I've considered it a must-have for every car since.

ADDED: After reading the posts below, I'd like to add that I keep a ponytail holder around my gearshift, so I always have one handy to pull my long hair back when I open it.

We have had sunroofs in more cars then not, heck, I even had one put in my first car.

My husband doesn't use it as often as I do - guess it's a good thing I now drive the car that has one and the one he has doesn't have one.

We had leaking issues with the one in our Expedition (2000), but my husband was able to fix it himself.

Otherwise, I use mine ALL THE TIME. My kids even like it open when it rains (not the glass, just the cover) so they can see. But it's normally open if it's not too cold or too hot.

My husband has one and loves it.
I use to think I'd like to try having one someday but I find my husband's sunroof just annoys me.
When he likes it open I feel it's too bright and I hate my hair blowing around.
At this point I'm totally over it and given your same choice (and everything else being equal), I'd pick the car without the sunroof.

I love mine. It is actually one of those car amenities I look for. All my cars MUST have a sunroof and YES I use it all the time. If it isn't raining, it is open.
I turn my AC up if it is hot, turn up the heat if it is cold. My kids love it too.

The one time I will close it is on long car trips so the kids can hear their movies.

Haven't ever had a leak issue.

Ahh - I always hated as a teen and kid folks who had convertibles and NEVER put the tops down. What a waste, so I vowed then and there to always take advantage of my vehicle perks:)

I love my sunroof. My car is 10 years old and I've never had a problem with leaks. I don't really open it very often because the traffic is loud but I do love the sun coming through the window even when its closed. I will definitely get one in my next car!

They don't leak at all. I only use it in the spring and fall and only when I remember to have a pony tail holder with me because it really hurts when my hair gets stuck in it.

The only reason I have it is that it came with the upgrades I wanted.

We both have them--car & truck. Previous car & truck, too, now that I think about it.
No leaks. I understand that's a bigger issue if you get O. installed aftermarket.
We don't use them a lot.
I agree-it quickly cools the car if its been sitting in the sun all day.
That's what I mostly use it for.
My husband uses his a fair amount.
I wouldn't pay extra for O., but if the price is the same, I'd get it.

I LOVE my sunroof, I think it's technically called a moonroof. Love it. But, I live in FL ... so we really only have maybe a month of winter per year -- even if I don't have it completely open I can have the visor open so I get more sunshine. I have a 2007 Honda CRV and it has never leaked.

I have one on my van. I forget I have it most times. I prefer not using it on a sunny day because it's so bright for me when driving. The breeze is nice for limited times in the spring and fall but at the end of the day I have no real use for it. Just FYI, it's regional on whether it's called a sun or moon roof. And many of us call it a sun roof during the day and moon roof at night, lol. Anyway, I've never had any leaking. They're definitely different and better than years ago. On ours, we also have a sliding cover under it made from the same material as the ceiling inside. We can open the cover and window completely, crack the front end and slide the cover to block sun, close the window and keep the cover open for sun or close everything up. I always keep everything closed all up. I just don't like the sun glaring in my eyes. I think it's just wear I happen to have my seat adjusted to drive why I get so much sun glaring in on my eyes. Hubby likes using it and doesn't seem to be bothered by it when he drives my van on occasion.

We have a sunroof and we enjoy it. It has never leaked (Subaru) or been a problem. When we lived in Alaska we called it our "aurora window". The kids love it. I am sometimes bothered by too much sun and will close it before they want to...but other than that I like it.

I use mine often, BUT (and it is a HUGE BUT) A year after I got my car, a girl rear-ended me. There was over $5000 damage to the rear end. After that we had two years of drought, so I noticed nothing. After every even medium heavy rain, my car has leaks. The sunroof is the culprit. The Toyota dealership said it was a sunroof "drainage clog" and charged me $38. Next rain, it did it again. They tried to tell me it needed another cleaning. BS. My back seat floorboard on the drivers side stays damp and mildewed, the dome light no longer works. The last two rains, the sunroof controls/map light dripped water. I have had the headliner drip on my leg where it meets the hard plastic of the door frame etc.
I do like the sunroof, BUT if I had it to do over again I would NEVER have gotten it. EVER They are way more trouble than they are enjoyable.
My car is a 2003. Was hit in early 2005. It is still the only thing I hate about my car. Otherwise I still love it.

Seems silly, but we've always struggled with that option too. While I could definitely live without mine, I do love having it. I try to use if often, but it's not as often as I'd like. Before having kids, it was open every possible moment. (Pause for nostalgic "aaaaah" moments.) Now it seems to create a lot of unnecessary noise. Never had a leak issue with any of ours. Good luck! Can you negotiate a good deal that includes it, just in case? :)

I like the sunroof (moonroof) option because with the moonroof type it lets
in a lot of light.

It is usually good for resale purposes. I think most of my cars have had the sun/moon roof. I had an old Audi that had a mind of its own and would open randomly.

If you forget to close it, you run the risk of rain, yet I have never had a leak. It is also an extra feature that could break and repair.

If you do not care and can get a low price on the one without then go for it.

I never use it. On days where it's nice enough to open it up, the sun usually burns the top of my head off. Also, I opened it once and a ginormous praying mantis fell in and I almost jumped out the moving car. That pretty much ended my love affair with the sunroof.
As far as I know, it's never leaked.

In Oklahoma it's nice to leave it cracked open in the summertime so the heat can escape. I do not open the shade very much though. I do use it more like a vent than an actual "let the sun shine in on my head" sort of thing.

I like it because I can feel air on my face even if I have the heater blasting heat on my feet. I can open it a tiny bit and get that fresh air.

I like ours, it's electric, it's tinted, and the shade pushes and pulls manually.
