To Tie or Not to Tie My Tubes?

I am pregnant with my fourth and final child. I am definitely having a c-section and am debating whether or not I should get my tubes tied or if my husband should get snipped. I'm looking for any experiences you've had with this kind of decision and also any stories regarding the aftermath of having your tubes tied. I've only talked to one mom who had this done and she said her periods are a lot heavier and more painful with increased cramping. Also, if your husband had a vasectomy, were there any health issues or problems afterwards?

What can I do next?

I had my tubes tied after my son was born 2 years ago. I, too, had to have a c-section, and honestly, I wouldn't know I had it done. My periods may be lighter than they were before and shorter, but I don't remember!

You might as well since they will already be in there! Not to sound gross or anything. Plus, I never worry anymore at all about if I've started or not, lol.

R., I had my tubes tied 5 years ago and it has not affected me at all. I am so glad I did it.

I had my tubes tied during my c-section almost five years ago and insurance covered it. I had no complications, and my periods did not change. It made sense to us for me to have it done since I was having surgery anyway. Now however, five years later, I am having a bit of trouble and we don't know yet if it is related to the tubal ligation. I'm having pain near my left ovary, and I have a cyst on my ovary, but it's the kind that goes away on it's own after my period and then can come back again when I ovulate on that side. We don't know if the pain is from that cyst, or if I have formed scar tissue from having my tubes tied. I'm having more tests done next month. Aside from the recent pain that may or may not be from having my tubes tied, I've been very happy with my decision. My husband would have had a vascectomy if I wasn't having a c-section. On a side note, my brother had a vasectomy without any complications and had a quick recovery. Good luck with your decision.

I had my tubes tied during my last c-section. I thought my periods were a little rougher right after, but we celebrated his third birthday this past Monday, and I really don't notice any difference now.

The sex is better - with no worries about birth control.

I hate, sometimes, that it feels so permanent. Given the choice, I think I'd snip my husband.

I don't know anything about getting tubes tied, since I did not do it.

My husband had a vasectomy and he was in and out of there in the time. I took the kids to sonic (which was only a block away) to get a drink and when we got back he was already finished. He was a little sore the first day but nothing like what we go thru! By that night he was up and about like nothing.

Good luck with whatever you choose...

I don't have any experience with either, but I do know that it costs nothing on alot of insurance plans to get the vasectomy, and it's a day proceedure that only takes a few minutes.
On the other hand, you will already be in surgery. Talk it over with your hubby and see what you come up with.

Hi R.,

I had my tubes tied many years ago after my third son was born, he is now 17 years old. Anyway, I had no complications but had to take it easy for a week. At the time my husband would've gotten his surgery but I said I would and I'm glad I did. Anyway, after mine my periods lightened up and only last 3 days. Before they would go on for a good solid week and be moderate to heavy. Last year I started experiencing "female" problems and never had them before in my entire life so I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the tubal. I had my right ovary removed due to a huge cyst that was very painful and causing my cycle to go crazy on me. I was fine for about two months then started having problems with my other ovary. I finally opted for the full hysterectomy and I'm doing great! Good luck with what ever you choose.

I had my tubes tied in 1999 and then just had them untied this past March. I was not told before my tubal that there are side effects that can come along with it. Some women experience more severe cramping, loss of sexual desire, etc. It wasn't until I was preparing to have my tubal reversed that I found out about the side effects that can occur.

I just posted a link for someone else on this topic, but now I can't find it. Try doing a google search for Tubal Ligation side effects.

It's a tough decision ... Good Luck!

I had my tubes tied when I had my last c-section. It took just a minute or so, and the recovery was no worse than it was with my previous c-section. My periods have been longer than I remember, but I really don't think I can blame that on the tubal. Your body changes with each pregnancy, and with age, so periods change, too. I wouldn't hesitate to get the tubal with the c-section. To me, it makes a lot more sense to get it done while you're already there on the operating table, paying for the c-section, than to have an entirely separate procedure done on your husband, which costs more and will require further downtime from him (not much, but still - with four kids, do you need him to be out for any time at all? ;).

I would say have your husband get a vasectomy. My husband received one and of course it was very uncomfortable that day but within 3 days he was running again on the treadmill and the next week he tried out for the SWAT team. He has always said that the first day was the hardest and then it was no big deal after that. It is so much easier for them then it is for us. You will be recooperating for 2 weeks when it takes him max 3 days. Plus...we had ours reversed after 6 years...no problem with it working and are now expecting our 4th baby. We are glad that we had that option cause we never thought we would want more children. I hope this helps you.
