I have an 18month old little girl who since she started on solid foods has been having extensive periods with diarrhea. We are now working on 4 weeks with diarrhea. She was admitted for observation and in a 16hr period of time she had 25 or 26 stools. She refuses to eat, has had fevers as high as 106.3, and has started to only have one wet diaper a day. Doctors have run several different stool cultures all coming back negative and done a ton of blood work all normal. Fevers have stopped after 5 days and she has started eating a very little and after IV fluids she is back to wetting like normal but the diarrhea remains. No history of anything family wise and at my wits end with no answers from doctors. Forgot to add that she has gone from being on the 78th percent of the growth chart to the 40th percent due to the weight loss from the diarrhea and refusing to eat. Please help!!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have tried the "BRAT" diet each time she has had an occurence like this with the diarrhea and has not worked doctors have now run labs for celiac and the ones that I have recieved results for are normal but still waiting on results to the rest of the celiac panel. I guess I should have started this out with the fact that she has had these bouts of diarrhea before. Her first one lasted about 5 days and then she was back to normal, next one lasted 2 weeks and then back to normal and now this last one has been 4 weeks and just today has started to slow up and started to be more like a soft mush instead of the mucuosy watery stuff. gross i know but i need answers so here i am. She has previously run the 106.3 fevers but usually not in conjunction with the diarrhea. She is starting to really scare me with the weight loss so any and all ideas welcome!!!

My son had diarrhea than ran down on both sides of the high chair, just awful. Found out when he started eating solids that he had a lot of allergies. that might be something to look into. We put him on a stright diet and the diarrhea stopped.

One of my friends had two daughters that were diagnosed with toddler diarrhea. Her daughters were both losing weight rather dramatically. The pediatrician said it happens sometimes, and there is no known cure, but she did not accept that answer. It turns out that both her daughters had Celiac disease (allergy to gluten), and by giving them bread, that only made it worse.

I am not saying that your daughter has Celiac disease. But she might have an allergy or sensitivity that is really causing upset stomach and diarrhea, which are not normal allergy symptoms. You might want to look into getting her tested for gluten, milk, egg, or other common ingredient allergies.

I don't have an answer as what is causing her all these things. But my mom'm mom, my mom and I give our kids bread to our kids when they have diarrhea, and it always works like a charm.
I am not talking about the sandwich kind of bread. We use "bolillos" but you can give her Baguette or Portuguese rolls that are almost the same.
Hope this help.
Other home remedy I remember when I was little, my mom use to get us bread and apple juice diluted with water. Actually it was an apple soda but I have never see it in USA, so I guess apple juice and water or even sparkly water would do the trick.

try just plain yogurt-worked great for my son-he had the same problem-get the natural bacteria back in his stomach..good luck...but it has to be plain-no fruit or flavored

Has any of the doctors told you to try the BRAT diet for a few days? Its Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast...that's IT! I think you can google it. Try that for a few days and see if that can get her on track. Good luck!

Wow this sounds really scary. Although I don't have any experience with this in my child, I would recommend (if you aren't already)Take her to a hospital that specializes in children. Get a second opinion.

Good luck to you, I hope you find answers soon and this problem is resolved asap!

Have you tried any form of protein shake for her? They generally tend to be calm on the tummy especially if you use one that has no gluten and lactose. I am a personal wellness coach and I work with a company that has amazing products. The husband of my of my associates was diagnosesd with terminal cancer. The only thing that he was able to keep down was our shakes, it helped him to get nutrition in when nothing else would stay in. I'm not sure if this would help your daughter but it would certainly be worth trying - please feel free to call me - ###-###-####. I can't imagine how scared you must be at this moment - you will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers. Good luck!!

Hi A.--I feel for you and your daughter. My daughter was hospitalized last year (3 yrs old then) for dehydration due to vomiting and diarrhea. The pediatrician told us to do the BRAT diet and told us to wait it out and that it was just a bug. Well---we took her to the emergency room and the dr's gave her lactobacillus (spelling?) and that was what helped my daughter! The ER dr told us to go to Target/Walmart and buy acidophilus from the vitamin section. It's powder form in a gel capsule. I sprinkle it into her beverage and it puts the good bacteria back into their stomachs to help prevent diarrhea. Talk to your local pharmacist on dosage. Hopefully she's better by now that you don't have to do this...but for next time you know.
