If you decide to go to a ped opthomologist, call Dr. Joel Leffler, ###-###-####. He's at 4112 W 15th St in Plano (about a block west of Coit Rd).
My 2 year old has, for the past couple of weeks, had an eyelid with a red, non-raised rash o nit. About a week and a half ago, it got scaly too, so I called the dr. The nurse initailly told me to use bendryl since it might be allergies. That helped a little, but not much. We went to the pedi who said he didn't see anything wrong, and that we should gently wash the lid twice a day with baby shampoo to see if that got it better. In the meantime, the rash seemed to spread to the other eyelid, but it comes and goes. So that is sporadic. The washing helped for several days. But for the past couple of days, the original eyelid has gotten red again. the scaliness has not reappeared. Let me stress that this is NOT his eye, just the eyelid, so it is not pink eye. He does rub at both eyes throughout the day.
Two questions:
Has anyone seen this with their own children?
Does anyone know of a good pediatric opthomologist in the Allen Plano area? I don't want to keep guessing at it with the pedi only to let it get worse (on the other hand, I'd love a specialist to tell me it's nothing ot worry about).

That sounds exactly like my child when he was about 2. He was diagnosed with psoriasis. There are many types of psoriasis, and he was treated with protopic by a pediatric dermatologist named Dr. Fred Ghali in Grapevine. He is now 6 and his psoriasis has lessened, which the Dr. had told us his was the type that most kids grow out of.
His started on his eyelids, and was red, flat and scaling, and sometimes the skin would just peel off in what seemed like sheets. I hope this helps.

The description sounds like seborrheic dermatitis, or eczema a couple of the kids at the school I worked at would come in with medicine for that. Also I have Celiac's and they used to switch my skin diagnosis from the above two back and forth. It just turns out that Celiacs has it's own special skin condition that looks similar to the others. A steroid cream or foam usually helps.
I also agree with seeing a pedi dermatologist instead. My daughter is 15 and she has had the same problem on/off for about 2 years. It flares up from time to time and she says it itches really bad. It get red, then dry and flaky. Our pedi prescribed Elidel cream but it doesn't provide much relief. Usually she'll put Tobridex ointment on it (it's a steroid ointment that is safe to use around the eye) and it helps some but you can't use it too often since it's a steroid and it will thin the skin.
Good luck!
It sounds like Eczema to me... you should go to a pedi dermatologist not an Eye Dr...
Good luck

I haven't heard of that issue before, but my daughter sees a pediatric ophthalmologist because of her juvenile arthritis and the risk for inflammation of her eye. We initially went to Dr. Stager, Jr. in Plano because we couldn't get in to see Dr. Berry in Dallas (closer to our house). But we started seeing Dr. Berry at the second appointment.
Here's their Website:

I highly recommend Dr. Berry, but since you said Plano/Allen, you might try Dr. Stager. I felt his office was too quick to get people in and out. Dr. Berry's office seemed much more thorough (though we have to wait a lot longer). But we only saw Dr. Stager once so it might have just been that particular day.
Even though my daughter sees Dr. Berry every three months, she had a weird discharge thing with her eye between appointments and we took her in. I was so glad we did. It was just environmental allergies causing the discharge, but Dr. Berry discovered that she had developed iritis in her left eye. It can come on quickly with no symptoms, so we were lucky that allergies caused us to go in. I have been very impressed with Dr. Berry and her office.
I think it's a good idea to get another opinion about your son's eye issue. I hope you can get to the bottom of it soon!
Hi, my name is Niki...and I just woke up with our two yr old daughter and she has the same thing. The eyeballs are NOT red, but she's got the red small bumps on her eyelids and around her eyes, I don't know what to do.
I recommend Dr. Priscilla Berry, however her office is in Preston Center their practice has a Plano office. Here is the link:http://www.popacas.com/phy4.htm She and her colleges spent 4 1/2 hours with my son two weeks ago trying to figure out the best course of action. and explains everything very well and won't quit until its done. No in and out with her.
I agree with seeing a dermatologist. When I was little I had eczema horribly on both my eyelids. No where else...just my eyelids. It was so bad that it would crack and bleed at times. We couldn't find a product that helped. Then one day I just grew out of it I guesss. Unforutnately it reappeared last week.
My 12 year old has something that sounds like this...a couple years ago she started getting a rash like, scaly redness on her eye lid and at the corner of her eye...like your son not in the eye (red eye) but the lid/skin. we took her to the dermatologist and she diagnosed it as a mild eczema/contact dermatitis and gave my daughter a prescription creme for it. I frankly can't remember the name of it...something with a "P" it think that i was actulaly initially concerned about using b/c of some warnigs but after talking to the doctor found out it would be used in such low amounts etc that i shouldn't worry...she hasnt had any problem with it. however, she only uses it occasionally...actulaly not even as much as she should. I'll probably take her back to the derm again soon b/c the redness is sticking around longer now and her lids are almost always like that and she doesn't like the feel of the ointment. so....your son could be experiencing the same thing.
you know i was actually looking at a tube of...i know it sounds weird but....lanolin breat oinment recently b/c i'm about to deliver my third and I know already i'll need that after 7 years since the last breast fed baby...anyway, i was looking at the consistancy of this lanolin oinment i got for when baby arrives and thinking it's very very similar in consistancy and feel to the prescription she's had...however, it doesn't feel as...well, i guess greasy is good word though i'm not sure the prescription is greasy per say....anyway, i was thinking about hwat i know about lanolin and how its purified so we can even use it where a baby/new born will eat! and that perhaps it'd be safe around the eye. i had daughter put a small amount on the scaly skin there on her lid (i have NOT used this on myself yet! LOL) and she said it feels better and less obtrusive than the other stuff...I woudln't recommend this to you with out asking a doctor though. i don't know how lanolin does around the eye but it's a really good moisture barrier and moisturizer and if a baby can nurse where its' applied that is a good sign to me...the only thing i can think of "bad" is that it's from wool and could there be allergies from it? but the tube says it doesn't cause that so.....well, anyway, just a thought but please ask a doc about it if you think to try that. good luck!
It's not really the same thing you've described, but my daughter had recurring sties on one of her eyelids for a couple of months last year. Almost as soon as one would go away, another would appear. The doctor had us wash both eyes with baby shampoo and a soft washcloth 3-4 times per day for about a month. He said this would keep the area exfoliated and allow whatever bacteria that was trapped under the surface to work its way out (yuck). My daughter hated having her eyes washed so much, but it's been about seven months since we did this, and there have been no more sties.
You may want to try stepping up the eye washing (at least until you're able to see a specialist) to see if that provides any relief. Since your doctor has already suggested washing with baby shampoo, it shouldn't create any new problems that new OTC ointments or medications might cause.
Also, I know it's impossible to keep a 2-yr old's hands clean, but if he's rubbing his eyes during the day, make sure his little hands are washed frequently (front and back) so he's not depositing more germs into/onto his already irritated eyes.
Good luck!
you may want to consider a dermatoligist versus an opthomologist. I would call an opthomologist if this is something they or the dermatologist should treat. It sounds like it has more to do with the skin than the eye. I, as an adult, have had the same problem with one eye for about a year now. It started when I was pregnant and I thought it would go away after I gave birth. I've treated it with 1% hydrocortizone cream which helps but I am planning on making an appt with the derm. as it just won't go away.
Dr Allan Davis is in Plano and is incredible with children. Myt daughter went to him at the age of 2--he is wonderful and truly knows how to relate to kids and make them feel at ease. Good luck! love, L.
go to an eye specialist. in the mean time, soak a white paper towel in very hot water... wring out wpt and apply to eye lid. toss used wpt. repeat procedure for about five minutes twice a day. try not touch eye area. good luck.
a dermatologist may be a better specialist to see if it is the lid and not the eyeball itself. ??? It sounds like a skin reaction to something (fabric softener, etc...). good luck
Since you say the actual EYE is not involved, you may want to see a dermatologist instead of an opthomologist. If its just the skin on the eyelid, then I don't know what an opthomologist can do for you and you may just end up frustrated even more. I would find a good dermatologist and have them look first, then if he thinks the eye itself is involved he can refer you. You will probably have to have your childs primary doc refer you to the derm. but it'll be worth it.
Dr. David Stager Jr. is really good. My son has been going to him for the past 7 years. He has an office in Plano. The phone number is ###-###-####. The address is 3900 West 15th Street, Suite 406, Plano, TX 75075.
Sorry, I thought I clicked on the clogged tear duct question a few up from your question. I'm sure this answer made no sense to you. Sorry.
2 of my boys had clogged tear ducts. The first one they made us wait a full year.........different Dr for my next son. He was 6 months old and the Dr. did it right in his office right in front of me. I was a little shocked, but relieved he didn't have to have anesthesia like my first son did. Can't remember his name but his office was off of Southlake Bl., the street just before the town square.
They actually take an instrument that looks like an ice pick and ram it in the duct to clear it out, then antibiotic drops and no more goopy eyes.

My kids LOVE her.
My son has the same issue and they diagnosed it in the allergy/eczema. I have been keeping my eye on him and so far it seems to follow a pattern with allergies, so I am going with it. I have pictures of my son's eyes when they are flared. If you would like to see them email me/message me and I will give you my email address.
