Toddler Has a Cold :(

My 17 month old has a cold - I had almost forgotten how bad these suck when they are younger. Last night he slept worse than a newborn and he usually sleeps 12 hours without a peep. Aside from the obvious, which we are already doing (humidifier, saline drops, nasal aspirator, plenty of liquids ) does anyone have any additional helpful hints for helping us survive this? We're not good on little sleep around here!

What can I do next?

My son is getting over his cold, and I gave him warm broth in his sippy's along with Chamomile tea, and he really liked that. Try warming him up from the inside.

Along with what Red said (I'm actually going to get what she suggested, thanks girl) and try that too, but the same brand has a baby chest rub and it has really worked for mine too. It makes him sleep better.

Also elevated his crib mattress. Put a pillow under his mattress to lift it up a bit.

Hope he feels better soon! Lots of cuddles from Mom should help too!

My 17 month old just had her first cold last week. Poor girl was so miserable. I checked out the cold medicines to see if there was anything safe to give her, and I found a 'Honey Elixir' by Little Colds. It's safe for young children over a year old, (Honey, botulism... yeah, I can see why over a year. lol.) because it doesn't have any actual medicine in it. It really helped my DD. I don't know that it helped her get better any faster, but it definitely soothed her throat. I would give it to her when she was coughing at night, and she wouldn't wake up again after that.

Good luck!

Oh, no fun for you or your son. We give our children a little honey to help sooth their coughs (after they turned one of course). We also use burp cloths to wipe their noses instead of Kleenex to help prevent a red sore nose. IN addition we rub some Vick's Vapor Baby Rub on their backs and chest to help them breath a little easier.

It's never easy when the little ones are sick. Hope he feels better soon, and everyone can get some sleep.

I would do vicks on chest and feet. Make sure he has a shirt and socks on. Also if you can find vitamin A in a liquid form you can put it in a drink. I mix it with sprite but not sure if you want to give a 17month old sprite but it is not the best tasting stuff. But it helps!!!!!!!! Any time my or my kids have allergys or sinus infections we take it. You can also heat some liquid vick on the stove in some water and let him breath in some of it. One other thing you can do is when he sleeps prop him up. If he's still in a crib put somethign under the matriss that will raise him up. If not you can put pillows to where he's at a incline. I use a reading pillow with my older boys. Hope he feels better soon!!!!!!!

Good Luck and God Bless!!!

Call his pediatrician and ask if he can take a small dose of Mucinex. I give it to both of my kids (2 and 4) and it works wonders. Give him a steam bath before he goes to bed tonight. I close our bathroom door and stuff towels under the door. Then I turn the shower on and let him play in there for about 15 minutes. The shower allows for more steam to build up. Then give him a good rub down with some lotion and maybe a smidge of Vick's Baby Rub on his chest. Give him some Tylenol or Motrin before bed so he will rest better.
Hope this helps and your sweet one feels better soon!

Eucalyptus essential oils are great for clearing nasal passages if he's waking up from not being able to breathe. I just put about two drops on the front of pajamas or a blanket, you can also use them in a nice warm bath. I got them at our local co-op.

Good Luck!
