My 2 1/2 year old son is not potty trained yet and he is not ready yet (I posted another question about this previously). My problem is (and has been for a while) is that occasionally he will wake up and his PJs are wet because his diaper was so full. I put him in Huggies overnights (size 6... it's the biggest they come in and he recently got into a size 6 Pampers Cruisers diaper). This doesn't happen all the time but today is the 4th time in a week that I'm washing his bed stuff (luckily I keep a waterproof pad in his crib so I don't have to change sheets too). I try to limit how much he drinks before bed. And on many occasions I can change his diaper around 4pm and by the time I'm getting him ready for bed (usually around 8:30ish... he's a late-nighter) he still has a dry diaper. Yesterday I kept him up later while I waited for him to wet his diaper and he still woke up with wet PJs. I'm always asking him to go pee-pee and sometimes if he wants to try to sit on the potty but I know he's just not getting it (probably cuz he's not at the potty ready yet and doesn't recognize the need to 'go'). Anyone else have this problem? I even thought that maybe there was something he could drink (like a juice he would like) that would help the pee flow. This isn't a potty question (see my last post) but maybe a nighttime suggestion or a switch to a new diaper (I've had problems with Huggies nighttime in the past too but wasn't sure if it was a diaper fault or not). Is there a better nighttime diaper? Tried pampers Baby Dry (and whatever the 'new' nighttime diaper they have is) and didn't like them.
I could try the diaper doublers and also on the occasions that I'm not seeing much in his diaper before bed, I will try checking his diaper before I go to bed. He's leaking out the top every time and the front of the diaper is always really heavy with urine. So both those solutions should help.
We have had this exact problem - I started putting plastic pants (you know the ones you use over cloth diapers) on over his nighttime diaper and 90% of the time it would keep him dry. Good luck!
My son is in cloth and we would put 2 full size inserts and a doubler, and there were many occasions that he would wet through. He is just a heavy wetter at night. I'm not sure about a better diaper, but this does seem to be a phase. My son is 28 months and wakes up many mornings dry now. Unfortunately, while he likes to where underwear once in awhile and will pee on the potty at daycare, he won't always go in the morning, and when he finally does, it is a lot and goes through the diaper too. We have an ultimate crib sheet so that we just have to unsnap to do the wash, but other than that, just know that you aren't alone.
There are things you can buy called "diaper doublers" that fits inside the diaper. Or you could try a maxi pad inside the diaper in the front area. Also, you might want to layer a sheet/a waterproof pad/a sheet/a waterproof pad etc. to make the changing a little easier.
Oh--and have you ever tried changing him while he's sleeping? I got really good at that because my son was usually sleeping/wet in his crib by the time I was going to bed and I couldn't stand the thought of him being that wet all night.
My first thought is those plastic training pants over his diaper. I never tried this, but was told to put 2 diapers on him.

My son is also 2 1/2 and far from potty trained.: ) At night, I only use the Huggies Overnites, IMO they are a lifesaver! Ever since I started using them, he wakes up dry every morning.....and he is a big wetter! Are you sure you're not using too big of a size? My son is in the overnites size 4 and he's a big boy, 30 lbs so maybe try a smaller size and see if it gives him a more snug fit. My only other suggestion is to change him in the middle of the night. Maybe set the alarm for 3 am and double check him, seems that would be easier then all the washing you're doing now. I've never tried the Pampers overnites but have "heard" the Huggies work much better and so far they've worked great for my little one! Good luck.
Our 2 /12 year old son is no where near ready for potty training and this used to be a big problem for me seemed like every morning my little guy was soaked. Tried the Huggies overnights without luck. Now we use Luvs. Never thought a cheaper diaper would do a better job we have only had one leaky morning but Daddy changed him before bed and didn't get it on quite right. They were a lifesaver and they fit just as well as the name brands. We also pushed bedtime back so he is a real late nighter going down about 9ish.
At Babies R Us and Toys R Us, they have inserts that you can put in the diapers. My daughter has the same issue. I buy a size bigger and use the inserts at night...problem solved. :-) Hope this helps.
I posted this very same question a month or so ago and got the same advice--i've tried everything and every different kind of diaper but nothing has 100% solved the problem. Something that does help though is to pull the diaper up an inch higher in the front than the back so it has more absorbing room where the pee collects. I also only give him plain water to drink after 5 p.m. and he's not a huge fan of it so he just drinks it if he's thirsty--he now only wakes up 1 or 2 days a week with wet jammies (compared to every single day before i started doing these 2 little things). I guess we were just blessed with heavy nighttime pee-ers! Aren't we lucky!? :p
All good answers so far love the idea of putting plastic pants on him. You can buy size 7 diapers but I believe they are only online. I did a quick search and found Pampers size 7 on amazon.
I folded a disposable diaper inside out the long way (it looked like a big Kotex) and used it for a liner. You can also buy liners, washcloths, cotton diapers, or use actual maxis.
