My daughter is 18mos with a mucocele on her lower lip. I've met with a pediatric dentist who referred us to an oral surgeon. We are still in the process of finding one that will treat her. I was wondering if anyone's had experience with mucocele removal on a toddler. Should I wait until she gets older to have the procedure done? She doesn't seem bothered by it. Will the mucocele have any effect on her teeth coming in? I've noticed it get to nearly the size of a marble.

What can I do next?

My dad is an oral and maxifacial surgeon in NC. He happens to be here on vacation so I asked him for you. He said an oral surgeon needs to look at it. My dad said if they say it's not needed to do at this age then they would continue to watch it. He's never removed one that young but for various reasons it may need to be done...basically you need to see an oral surgeon.

He said it shouldn't interfer with the teeth coming in. If you need a referral for an oral surgeon here in Dallas my dad knows many of them (he use to be president of the national board)and I can get you a list.

My dear friend's son had this surgery when he was only 8 months old. You have to realize, this occurred in 1972, and he came through it fine. She said his would get big like that and then go back down, but they decided to go ahead and do it at that age since it wasn't going to get any better. I don't guess it had interfered with his teeth coming in, but I don't know. Good luck with your decision and I hope the surgery will go very well.

hi there, i work for an oral surgeon in lewisville. we remove mucoceles all the time! so have you seen the oral surgeon yet for a consult? just schedule a consult and the doctor will let you know if you should wait until she is a little older. the only thing is that if she is biting on it, it could get bigger and start bothering her. good luck!!

We just went through this with my son - actually, it was almost a year ago and he was little over 2 at the time. I know how you are feeling - we were very worried, especially after we were told how commen this was yet I had never heard of it or seen it before. Don't be worried, everything turned out just fine and it has not come back (even though there is a possibility). I used Dr. Sandra Armstrong in Southlake because my sister in law is a dentist there. The staff was great, they gave my son something to drink (that would knock him out). It took about 45 min for that to kick in so take something to keep her busy in the waiting room. Most dentists/oral surgeons have stuff but after 45min everything is "old news." Once the "juice" began to take effect, they took him back and from what I understand, they numb the area and cut off the mucocele. It is a fairly simple procedure. Beware, the inside of her lip will look worse than it really is because they "burn" it to keep it from bleeding. He slept most of the rest of the day and once he woke up he was fine. After a couple days his lip looked normal and after a week you couldn't tell anything had even really been there. Good Luck!!

My five year old daughter just had one removed. We used Dr. Kelli Ettenbreck in Frisco. She is a regular dentist and just deadened the area with a local and then cut it off. My daughter never felt a thing. It is ually caused by some sort of trauma (like falling and hitting their mouth). It is my understanding that it will not go away on its own and it may come back even after removal but it really has nothing to do with the teeth or development. Ours was just a concern of appearence with her strating Kindergarten this year. I hope this healps.
