Toddler Not Taking a Nap

My daughter will be 2 in a month. The past week she has been letting me put her down for a nap, but then she plays for about 2 hours. I have tried going in there after 2 hours and talking to her about needing to take a nap and leave, have tried to get her up, let her play until she is ready and then put her down. Sometimes she gets so upset about taking a nap that I have to take her out of her room to calm down, and then put her back to sleep. Maybe I am missing her nap opportunity??? Anyways, not sure what to do, if this is a growth spurt, or just alot going on with the holidays or what. I am looking for any suggestions or just anyone that can tell me that is it normal and that their child does the same thing.

What can I do next?

What time do you put her down?

Make sure she gets plenty of runaround time in the morning... not before nap...otherwise she will be too hyper still, to nap.
getting a toddler lots of runaround time in the morning, gets out their yah-yah's. Then, come home, have lunch, WIND-down and make everything calm... have a daily routine before nap, verbally tell her nap is coming up "after lunch" etc. Then factor in time to wind-down the child. A child cannot nap, if too keyed up, still.

THEN, nap.

At 2 years old, nap and sleep tweaks commonly happens. They are changing, cognitively... but if you keep to a routine...and she is tired.... not over-tired... nap will be better.

Over-tired kids... also do not sleep well, nor fall asleep well, and for some kids being over-tired actually makes them more "hyper."

My kids who are 4 and 8... still nap. My 4 year old son every afternoon. My daughter will when she is tired.
They don't battle about it.

all the best,
Susan

My son turned two last month and he has skipped more naps in the last month than his whole life combined. He's probably skipped at least one nap a week for the last month. Not sure really what happened those days, nothing out of the ordinary. One thing, and the only thing, that's nice about it is he gets to bed sooner.
Maybe she doesn't need to go down as soon as she is going down. I put my son down based on what time he wakes up in the morning, and some days he can stay up longer. I just watch his cues and when he seems to be tired we head to his room. Good luck!

My daughter went through that too around that age, and a couple of times since. She's now 3 and a half and still napping for at least two hours almost every afternoon. My rule was that she needed to rest, so after letting her talk/sing for a while, I would go in and remind her that she needed to be quiet. If she wasn't quiet after that, she'd lose a toy (one of the many stuffed animals in her crib). A couple of times she's lost a lot of animals, but most of the time it only takes one reminder. Usually now she's out pretty quickly. So many people think kids are done napping far earlier than they actually are. Just hang in there and you and your daughter will be much healthier and happier for it! Good luck!!

My dd has done that on and off-everyday will not be perfect. Does she nap at the same time everyday?and go to bed at the same time? Both my kids go for a nap and go to bed at the same time evryday. My dd who will be 5 next week still naps, but on an odd day she will not nap, but knows she has to stay and rest even if she sings, reads, etc till I come get her. The funny thing is she never gets out of her bed she waits for me to come in-LOL! :) But as long as she rests I say let her go they will skip a day now and then . Just keep up your routine and all will be fine-L.:)

You cannot control whether she sleeps or not. I don't care who says you can, you can't! If she is crabby at bedtime and is acting like a nap would have done her some good, look at the schedule you have her on. My 3 2yr old girls wake at 7, nap at 1 and sleep at 7.

Now, sometimes I will hear them playing in their cribs and being silly, I let it go. When they are tired they will sleep.

Don't over think it...it is normal and everyone grows out of a nap at some point. My girls love nap time. They sleep for an hour and a half and then play the rest of the time. Don't make it a punishment. Call it quiet time...not nap time and TURN OFF THE MONITOR! It will save you the stress unless you have her in a dangerous situation in her room (which I imagine you don't)...it isn't needed.

Good Luck, and yes it is normal for everyone at some point!

I tell my daughter if she doesnt nap, she has to play quietly in her bed, so that at least she's resting.
