Toddler Pillow Question

This stems from my previous post "Toddler pillow and sleeping IN bed not ON it?"

Does your tot sleep with a pillow? Those travel sized pillows seemed ideal at the time, but they just end up on the floor. What's the best to use?

My son turns 3 in December and is still sleeping on the bed... not in it.. (yet) He has a pillow pet, which gets ignored. He has Autism/Aspergers so fluffy toys and stickers and things are not motivators.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have been trying to find "flat" pillows that won't strain his neck.. but they are all so puffed up that I will be forced to take stuffing out, which makes the pillow's insides feel like there are balls of wool inside. Seems very uncomfortable to sleep on. Temperpedic pillows are just too expensive.

I waited until my children asked for pillows, they don't seem to need them the same way. My oldest was pretty old before she wanted one. The others seem to have them in their beds and want them (because their sister does) but not actually sleep on them. Even my five year old, though she starts out on a pillow, always ends up off of it. I kind of feel the same way about sleeping on the bed, as long as you dress him warm... or just don't make the bed, have the bottom sheet on and the others pulled down for him to get used to it..? We never delt with that, though, so you might not take advice from me!

Well both my kids do, but my daughter didn't get a pillow until she moved to a big bed at 22 months. Even then I gave her this super old pillow that is really flat...it's actually an old hospital pillow from the era that you were allowed to take them home with you b/c they didn't reuse them! Anyway, it's perfect for her. My son uses his pillow pet (he's 27 months) and loves it. My daughter has two but doesn't use them for sleeping. My son has never had a "real" pillow. I think it just depends on the kid. If your son is comfortable, I wouldn't worry.

I did see some smaller, flatish pillows geared for kids at Bed Bath and Beyond for like $25. You can always use their coupons too and get 20% off.

Lol my DD pillow is a very cheap very old pillow. I bought it at a dollar store used it washed it an it came out super flat lol so I thought perfect and I put a cute pillowcase and she's been using since 8 months.

Maybe buy a cheap one and wash it a couple times to defluff. O and I didn't machine dry I just hung it and lay flat to dry
My DD has a pillow pet panda and she would rather use the flat one
Good luck
:)

Children don't really need to sleep with a pillow. My daughter has two pillows on her bed and sleeps without them. If he is more comfortable without a pillow I would just let him be.

He doesn't need a pillow so I woudln't worry about it. If you want him to have one, just buy a standard pillow, maybe one that isn't too think or huge. My kids were in twin beds at 2 years old, with regular sheet, blankets, and pillows (and rails), so I know that is doable.

Go to a fabric store, such as Joann's and buy a yard of fleece. Fold it over and over, until its the size you want and then hand stitch the edges together making a flat pillow. It will be soft and comfy, and washable. If you dont sew, find a neighbor or friend who does and have them help make a couple pillow cases for it in the right size. Then you can wash the cases when needed. If you lived near me, Id do it for you in about 5 minutes time. You can also buy stuffing like you would use to stuff a toy and make a smaller pillow from a pillow case (or fabric) and stuff it until its the desired plumpness. The bags of stuffing come in small sizes so you should be able to make just a pillow with one. Ask at Joann's, and they will help you.

Do you have an old, flattened pillow in your house? If not, buy a cheap one from Walmart, flatten it out by using it for awhile or laying something heavy on it for awhile, and voila! But if he doesn't want a pillow, I don't see why he has to have one?

The theraputic pillows are worth the investment. They last for many YEARS. My daughter had one that was too thick. I took the electric knife and sliced about 1 inch off of it across the back. it worked perfectly. It was just like slicing bread.

While they don't need one, my soon to be 3 year old just discovered them.

He JUST started using one.

I would not use a flat stanard pillow. Too big. Afraid of suffocation.

I was given a small, rectangular, flat pillow at my shower w/a blanket that acutally works. It has a pillow case. It's flat. It's tiny.

I, then, found a mini, throw pillow in the kids section @ Wal-mart that I bought just to decorate his chair. However, he uses that sometimes on the sofa and/or his bed. Perfect.

So I say,
small
flat
find one in the baby/toddler section!
