Toddler Poop That Is Causing Painful Rash

For about the last week or so, every time my toddler poops he gets a very bad diaper rash and screams that it hurts when we try to clean him and change him. It only happens for poops, and clears up well between BMs. He is no where close to being potty trained. (I wish he was, but is showing ZERO signs of readiness). We have started just putting him directly into the bathtub and cleansing him with plain water, which seems to help. I have tried treating it for yeast, and we do have a diaper cream that works wonders in helping clear it up. We also try to change him frequently. Unfortunately, he has no "pattern" so often it happens at nap time or at night making it worse. Our problem is just that every BM brings it back again. His diet hasn't changed any, but I am going to start a food diary today to try to see if certain things could be making it worse. I know juice can cause it, but he only drinks milk and water. Does anyone have any other suggestions on preventing this, or what could be causing it other than a possible new food sensitivity? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, it seems to be strawberries and/or blueberries causing it. Funny enough, he seems ok with citrus. Of course, he loves strawberries. Poor kid :(

Consider foods with a tomato base and don't forget that pineapple is a citrus, too. It's in a lot of your canned and frozen mixed fruit combinations. My daycare kids love canned madarin orange slices; but I have one child who cannot tolerate them. I'm wondering about eggs and even peanut butter.

It's obviously something that's been going on each day for a week...could very well be teething if he's working on molars.

For my oldest it was milk and citrus, as well as tomato - juice or product. To this day, a can of mandarin oranges, a pizza, or a plate of spaghetti will reduce him to tears on the potty. Baking soda in cool water was what I used to change his bottom - I now have a deep utility sink in my bathroom with a sprayer just for that.

I mixed zinc oxide, clotrimazole, cortaid, and antibiotic and smeared it on at every diaper change. Vusion has similar ingredients, if you have medicaid the $100 tube is free. Zinc oxide is cheap enough to "waste" at 2 bucks a tube, and I put that on him every single diaper change - rash or not - to provide a barrier between him and the poop.

Is it possible that he is actually constipated? my girl went through that for about six months; it was a nightmare. I thought she had diarrhea, but finally finally the dr explained that constipation causes leakage around the blockage and that was stuff that had been sitting for a while and it burned her bottom. we finally cured with an enema, keeping diapers off for a while (mommy cleaned everything up), and long term use of miralax (under care of physician). Also citrus foods made it worse. also check for allergy to milk; it can develop later than birth. we used aquaphor in gobs after cleaning; that would help keep from being so bad. don't use wipes; get the sensitive wipes. good luck.

Well, my first thought was teething, but he probably would have done that most of his teething life, so that is not it. I would definitely see if he is sensitive to citrus fruits or something...with the heat I know my kids are seeking juice more often. It definitely could be dietary so the log may be your best way to find out right now. I do know that some foods can cause some reactions up to 4 days after eating/drinking them, so this gets tricky. My two children were tested for food intolerances and we eliminated the foods for four months and their issues (skin and ear infections) have cleared up completely, so food is a major source to some of these aliments. Good luck and I hope you find the solution.

Eliminate anything with sugar in his diet. Sugar creates yeast. And feed him a good yogurt with probiotics in it at least once a day. This helped when we had the exact same problem.

I know this sounds crazy, but it worked for me and made me a total believer: Here goes... we all know that oil and water do not mix, well, clean the area, put the diaper cream of your choice on there (I use arbonne baby) and then with a cotton ball, apply plain wesson oil to the area! Again, I know that sounds wacky, but the urine and the stool will not EVER come in contact with the skin so the rash has a chance to heal and once it heals will not come back! Changing diapers is a breeze since nothing will stick to the skin where the cream and the oil are. You can also use baby oil, but from my experience, the baby oil is just absorbed through the skin ~ the wesson oil is wonderful especially for times when the diaper is going to be on for a long period of time (night!)
Best of luck!

Try limiting the milk. He may be expelling it because his body does not need it any more.

He may be showing a lack of interest in going potty because of the new baby. If you explain that big boys get to do (blank) -- fill in a favorite activity that your son does that babies do not do. Then, after a few days of this, explain that big boys also use the toilet. You may even want to have daddy show him (at least how to pee).

Invite a friend over that is a little older that uses the potty. Explain to your son that his friend uses the potty because he is a big boy. When the friend goes to the bathroom, explain to your son that he will be right back to play, but he is going potty because he is a big boy. Eventually this might help get him interested.

I hope this helps.
