My 17 month old son was diagnosed with a toddler's fracture, after he tripped while playing outside at the sitter's house. The Doctor, radiologist, and orthopedic specialist couldn't agree if there was actually a fracture or not. They put a cast on just to be safe and said they would take it off in 4 weeks. They also told me I could come back and have it re-xray'd in a week or two. If they found nothing, the cast could come off. We just had it re-xray'd (after 2.5 weeks) and the ortho. nurse practictioner said she may see some new growth but it would probably be ok to take off the cast. Well the cast is off but he's still not walking. It's only been a day and we were warned that he would still think he had a cast on because his muscles & joints will be stiff. Has anyone else experienced this? How long was the cast on? How long did it take for your child to be running around again?
Where is the fracture and where does your child feel the pain? Just curious.
My son was not a toddler when he fractured his arm and had to be in a cast. It did take him about a month or 2 to get full use of his arm again. He had fractured it in 2 different places though. He had to go to physical therapy. I am not sure if they do physical therapy for toddlers, but you could check.
I think you should give it a few more days. A day isnt long enough for him to get re use to it not being there. Give it a week and if he still doesnt walk or walks funny then take him back.
My daughter had a buckle break when she was 1 1/2 yrs. old and had to have her leg in a splint for about 6 weeks. I thought that she'd just start walking as soon as the splint came off but that wasn't the case. She'd "walk" around my house on her knee's. It took her a couple of weeks to gain the confidence to walk on her feet again. Hang in there, give it some time. What helped my daughter out was spending time with another boy her age who was walking.
i just went through this, this past summer. i was so worried when my son wasnt walking right after it came off. it got a little better after 2 weeks and was completely normal by about a month. so give it some time. i was so scared he was going to walk like that his whole life. lol
