I want to get my son a hand held game but not one that requires violent games or is more than 50 dollars. We are in the car a lot and at appts and I think it would keep him occupied. I was thinking about the Mobie or the Leap Frog 2. Anyone know about either of these or recommend one over the other. I don't want it to be just a learning tool but kids games also. Oh he is 5.

What can I do next?

My son ,who is 4, has the Leapster and loves it! They have games that range from 4-9 years old. I like that the pen is attached so he can't loose it or drop it in the car (then no one can reach it). Go to leapfrog.com because they have sales on them for the holidays.
The DS is coming out with little kid games now but I would worry about the little pen getting lost.

We got the Leapster for our son when he was 4. He had some difficulty at first with managing buttons, etc. but once he learned / realized that the game itself tells them what to do, he did well. It has been durable "dropped" a couple of times or fallen out of the car. One of the cartriges even went through the wash by accident and it still works. The games can be a bit pricy but nothing like wii games and you can usually find Leap Frog coupons for $5 off.

To Jen C., I wouldn't say your 5 yr old will NEVER outgrow the DSi. My kids are 8 & 10 and have asked for an iTouch for Christmas. There is always something better according to most kids!

You might want to check on the Leapster or Leapster 2. It is by Leapfrog and the games are usually educational!

The one thing I would keep in mind is how long they will use it for, and when they will outgrow it. I spent more to get my son a (also 5) a DSi. I do not get him violent games, there are many fun things for him to do on it, including a fun camera with distortion lenses, and he will never out grow it.

Get him a leap frog hand held game. Those are educational and not violent. I don't know how much they are for sure though. My nephews have leap frogs and they are great. They even have fun games that don't look too educational to them if that makes sense.

Both of my kids have a Leapster and they both love it. Lots of choice for games - and I often see them at Once Upon A Child. You could check Craigslist, too. I also recommend the AC adapter so you don't have to burn through batteries at home.
