My 2 year old daughter has always been a big sleeper and loved her bed.. Night night was an early word for her and that meant she wanted to go to bed. Now at 2 she can clearly say "go to bed" she got the MMR shot on 12/27. The next day she was sick with a cold.. the cold turned into pneumonia and an ear infection. We had her to the dr. this week her ears are fine and her chest is clear. She has been sleeping and sleeping this week. Wednesday she got up at 700 and wanted to take a nap at 830. Yesterday she got up at 830 and wanted to take a nap at 1015 - and she slept 4 1/2 hours. Today it is 1000 am and she istill not up. she goes to bed at 730 and is normaly up at 730. How long should i let this go on.? Is this a normal reaction to the MMR and or the pneumonia?

What can I do next?

Hi Lisa,

Tell all of this to your pediatrician personally as soon as possible. He will tell you what the possible explanations are AND ask you the right questions. Take her in today or Monday. If you can't take her in, call his office, ask to talk to him personally. Tell him everything you just told us. If it is normal, he'll tell you.

Sincerely,
D.

I'm not a pediatrician but your daughter is probably needing extra sleep to recuperate from the illness. Also it is normal for a 2 year old to sleep 15 hrs a day. Actually, studies show that kids who sleep more (like 15 hrs vs 14 hrs or less/day) have a higher average IQ (see "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child by Dr. Weisbluth). Most likely you have a smart little girl who gets a healthy amount of sleep normally and just needs a bit more after shots and her illness. If her extra sleep continues though you should check with your pediatrician to see if somehting else is contributing. Good luck!

I'd have her checked. Seems like something else is going on.

I agree with the other mom's here - get in touch with her pediatrician ASAP. Having pneumonia takes a lot out of you and that may mean she needs to sleep more to recouperate the rest of the way even though she is over the main part of it but it sounds like she's sleeping a lot more than normal or needed. Chances are something else is going on. See what her doctor says. When your immune system is compromised by an infection secondary infections are easier to obtain. Better to be safe. Good luck - S.

I would follow up with your doctor as well. She could be going through a growth spurt... is she really hungry?

Could she have mono? Any fever? If so, have the dr check for that. I think its going around. . .

I was always taught that a body knows when it needs to sleep. With your little one being sick, coupled with her love of sleeping to begin with, it sounds like she 'knows' what she needs. Vaccines are a true invasion of those small bodies, and I don't think that any two children respond the same. If her doctor's not worried about this volume of sleeping, maybe her response is giving you some insight into how she'll respond to not feeling well as she gets older. (As the mother of a 17-year old, just wait 'til she's a teen if you think she sleeps a lot now!)

The vaccine comments are non-sense. And I can say that because my two year old hasn't had his vaccines in... I don't know how long, but soon after his second birthday he started to want to be in his bed a lot, more and more. He often asks me to put him in his bed, and a lot of the time he doesn't sleep, but he takes at least two naps a day now, when it used to be one, and the other times he just sits/lays in his bed.

A lot of people blame vaccines for their problems, but my child's problems started right around when he'd get his vaccines, and he hasn't had them yet. This has been going on for at least two months now. Getting him in to a pediatrician soon. And getting his vaccines. In this state that last thing I want for him is to catch something crazy.

It is normal for children to sleep more after being sick. Just be sure to check on her often try to gently wake her up once in awhile to be sure she is ok. I work in a pediatricians office and I have heard other moms ask this. Your daughters body needs extra rest to recover and get back to her usual self. Good Luck.

Lisa,
I am so sorry about your daughter, I know it must be hard. It doesn't sound like something typical. Is she not eating well and could that be the lack of energy? I would get her in tomorrow to the doctors so they can check her out. I hope she feels better soon and know your in our thoughts.

Hi Lisa,
Here is some advice you have not received yet and maybe you are now open to.
Your daughters body is very clearly trying to tell you something and I believe by posting your question that means you are open to listening.
The adverse reactions from the vaccine might be considered "common" and "normal" by the medical community, but they are the key to a bigger picture of your daughters body and its ability to handle vaccines.
My son began having adverse reactions to vaccines at 6 months. That is when I had to start becoming a true health detective, which I believe would be what you could be doing now.
There are so many wonderful websites to research the hot topic of vaccines. Some are:
WWW.NVIC.COM (national vaccine information center). You should start there as it is critical to report this adverse reaction. Yes, it is an adverse reaction. Ask yourself if it is "normal" for something that is supposed to keep your child healthy to in fact be creating other illnesses? Your pediatrician will not tell you to do this crucial first step of reporting to the agency.
WWW.MARYTOCCO.COM (local expert on vaccines)
Once you have made the report and start studying the subject you may want to become open to the wide range of health care options for your child.
When my son began having reactions another Mother advised me to find a homeopathic practitioner, or Naturopathic doctor to help treat the adverse symptoms he was left with. It was advice that I took and have never regretted. My whole family is robustly healthy after being open to a differnt approach to health.
I hope your daughter is on her way to a full recovery and that I have provided you with concrete answers to your very important questions.
Warmly, C.

I don't think this is normal behavior even if just been given the MMR. There are side effects to everything we eat and drugs/meds we take and give to our children. I would take her back to the doctor or call the office and let them know what your situation is they may have you bring her in asap or just wait it out a few more days. Once she's up does she react like normal or does she still lay around, is she eating like normal? I have a 4 yr old niece who never slept at that age,she would be up til 3 or 4 am sometimes and then sleep for about 2 or 3 hours then be ready to go again.
