Ok so my 21mo is having another allergy attack. This is #2 for her in two months. the first led to a sinus infection which she was put on an antibiotic for and cleared it up in about 5 days. Now that we had the cold snap for a few weeks and this awsome weather this week she is now showing the same symptoms as before runny nose nasal congestion and coughing from the drainage she is also snoring like a champ. Her father and I have the same issues with SA but we can take some benadryl on the onset and get on top of the hystimine before it gets bad. But for dd is there anything out there for her age? She is 35in tall and 30# so she is a big girl. I am going to call and speak to the pedi tomorrow, have any of you mama's had your lo on any type of allergy meds? I forget to mention that she gets a little rash on her face after playing outside for awhile. when we come in we wash hands and face to get any pollen off. thanks for any info.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I spoke to the pedi and she had me go and get the claritian(sp) she said to get the generic version. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that it helps before a sinus infection happens. Thanks for all of the advice.

Our son has seasonal allergies. He's 4 1/2 now. At about 2 years he was told he could have benedryl, I tried it but no matter how small the dose I gave he became lathargic so I don't give it to him. His ped let him have Delsym when he had a cold between 2 and 3. At 3 1/2 we had bloodwork done and found out out of 0 (no allergy) to 6 (severe allergy) he is a level 6 to rye grass. The park down the street is full of it, and we added some this time last year to fill in patches in the back yard. This was before we know he was allergic. His eyes would swell and be really red. The doc said to give him Zyrtec or Claritin since I didn't like the side effect of Benedryl. He was on Zyrtec and now gets the generic Claritin, Loratidine (something like that) from Kaiser. It works great and doesn't have side affects. Check with your ped before doing anything. Also, if you give her an allergy medicine watch for change in attitude, mood swings, and aggresiveness. Either one can affect your child that way. Zyrtec did for our friends kid, they switched him to Claritin and he's fine, allergies subdued and no outragous mood swings. Good luck.

Both my Little Ones have been on Claritin & Singular ( I don't do the Singular as often b/c it's expensive but Claritin is now OTC). My Daughter has been on it since 5 months old. She is now 4 1/2 yrs. My son started at about 6 months & he is now 16 months. Hope this helps out. I understand your situation :)

Children's benadryl is available over the counter, has a safe proven record of usage for kids 6 months & older. There is also Children's Zyrtec, which you can get OTC. We give our son 1/2 tsp Zyrtec when needed, on top of his daily prescribed Singulair, as per his pediatrician's and allergist's recommendation .

Given that your child is getting a rash during outdoors exposure, you should probably at least talk to your pediatrician, but preferably get her allergy tested (our son was allergy test, "scratch test," at 20 months--he was diagnosed with severe peanut allergies at 18m, and we got a referral to the pediatric allergist in our area; the first available appt was 2 months after that, for allergy testing). It's better to know what things you need to try to avoid, and there are some types of allergies that "cross"--people that are allergic to certain tree/tree pollen are also allergic to cantaloup, for example.

My son also suffers from allergies. Pediatrician has recommended Zyrtec or Benadryl (both in Children's form) I give him 1/2 a tsp. I have given this to him since he was around 18 months. He is now 3, and weighs 29 lbs - so I'm sure this dose would be safe for your daughter!
Allegra is now available over the counter, and pediatrician just mentioned this at his 3 yr check up, that she prefers Allegra over Zyrtec, less side effects.

My now four year old was the same way, we were in the ped office every 6 weeks with a sinus infection, she has been on zyrtec for the past 2 years and no sinus infections. We give her 1 tsp at night before bed. she is about 40 lbs.

My 15 month old son has allergies, his nose was always dripping clear mucus and he often coughed. For awhile I thought he was just getting viral colds until his pediatrician told me it's allergies. He told me to give him the liquid form of clariton and that the store brand is fine to use. It definitely helps him. I have allergies as well.
