My friend's daughter is 13 months and is allergic to grapes. She gets a red slightly raised rash on her face, neck, back, & arms. It doesn't itch her. Pops up about 30 min. after eating one and goes away with Benadryl.
Hi - My 2 year old came up with a skin thing tonight. There are about a dozen bites/welts and 10-12 red patches about the size of a quarter all on her body. Mostly her arms and trunk, but some on her legs, one on her face, and one on her neck. She has had about 2 or 3 instances in the recent past (last 6 months) where she woke up with "bites" all on her body. My husband and I have thought that maybe there was a mosquito, bed bugs, etc... something... so we would just wash her sheets in hot water and the bites/marks would go away by the end of the day. She got a couple of those bites earlier today and they were gone by naptime, but then tonight she broke out in a bunch, like I mentioned... some bites, some just medium size red patches. If we ask her if they itch, she says yes, but she's not really itching them and doesn't seem to be bothered. What could this possibly be? Could she just be getting bit by mosquitoes? Could she be allergic to something? (She hasn't eaten anything new or different today.) Could it be fifth's disease? (My mom mentioned that.) If anyone has any insight, I would appreciate it! I don't want to rush off to the doctor if it's just sensitive skin... :) Thanks so much!!!

Hi J.,
I'm not a doctor but it sounds a lot like hives. My daughter would get then very often as a young toddler. Her first encounter was at about the same age as your daughter and it was after she had tasted her first raspberry. She would also get them from amoxil amd other antibiotics. I thought that she had outgrown it as she is now 12 year old but on our recent trip to England,(she has been there many times as that is where I am from) she broke out and had them for about a week. It seemed to get worse in the evening but when it was at its strongest she was smothered. As a baby it didn't seem to bother her much but as a 12 year old they were extremely itchy. You have described them just as I do when I try to explain it to people that have never encountered hives. It looks like a bad mosquito bite but connected together and then just when you think it has gone from one place they appear somewhere else, it's weird. The hardest thing to figure out is what it is that she is allergic to.
The doctors will probably tell you to give her an antihistermine. You should take her to the doctors as hives can be dangerous as it can close the airway if it is a bad case. It never happened to my daughter and if it didn't affect your daughter that way chances are it won't but better safe than sorry.
I hope this helps, let me know.
Doubt its Fifths desease, that usually looks like the child has been slapped and it doesn't go away right away and if I remember correctly, I think its a one time deal. That said, if it is fifths, you need to have her checked. Its not dangerous for her, but it would be for you as you are pregnant.
Could be hives, did you recently change laundry detergent.
Could be a bug. Bed bugs and dust mites get into the matteress and pillow case too. You can wrap both in tight plastic to suffocate the buggers.
Hope this helps
I'm not sure what this could be but anytime you are pregnant and you have a younger child exhibiting symptoms you should get your child checked out as some toddler age illnesses can pass along to your unborn child. I'm not saying it's chicken pox because unlikely it is but i had chicken pox while my mom was pg with my little sister and she got chicken pox inuetero, which was very dangerous. Something to at least call your pediatrician about... Hope the rash is all healed up so no worries. God bless.
Something similiar happened with me a few years back with my oldest son. He looked like he had ant bites all over him, so I took him to the after hours peds and they were hives! He hadn't had anything different in his diet, etc. We were never sure how they came to be, but he had been up at church at the fish fry that afternoon so we figured maybe it was something there. It never happened again. If I were you I would take her to the doctor, since this isn't the first time its happened, maybe she has allergies?
