Toe Nail Infection???

My three year old has a black mark on the nail of his big toe. I have been watching this over the last couple of weeks and it seems to be getting a bit larger and blacker. It is at the base of the nail and seems to bleed into the cuticle as well. I have scheduled a doc appointment to check on this, but has anyone ever has something like this? I am thinking that it is going to be some kind of Nail Fungus, but am hoping that it is not anything more serious.

What can I do next?

It sounds like the toe nail is damaged , maybe his knocked it recently and this is the result , I damaged my toe nail once and it went black and fell off , then a new one grew. I would still go to the Dr though to make sure.

Do you recall any trauma to his nail bed such as a bad case of stubbing his toe, something heavy dropped/fell onto his toe? If so, this would be the blood trapped below the nail. This is extremely painful at the time of the trauma but it will eventually heal with time (several months). In some cases, the nail falls off and regrows and other cases the nail remains intact until it grows out.

I agree, it is damaged and it can take up to 6 months to repair its self. soaking in salt water maybe two times a day will help with an infection. But going to a dr. is a good idea.

It sounds to me like maybe he dropped something on it or stubbed it. It is quite likely a blood blister under his toe nail. It sounds gross but I did that to my thumb nail once. I was workin out & dropped a 25lb weight on it. Anyhoo, I used a lighter & steralized a needle & poked a hole in the nail just above the black spot. It didn't hurt. Once I reached the blood blister, the blood leaked out the little hole I made & my nail felt great (cuz the pressure had been realeased). Good luck C.!
