Can you recommend a toilet lock that locks automatically and is easy enough for my 5 year old and arthritic mother to use?

What can I do next?

Just watch the child and teach them to stay out of the bathroom. I can't even imagine being a poor 5 year old, getting up to pee and can't open the toilet because they are tired. Heck if I were him I would pee in your tub but I am spiteful like that

Hub? Toilet lock? Keep bathroom door closed.

Your best bet is to keep baby out of the bathroom altogether.
The whole room (and kitchen too) are just jam packed with things that are dangerous for babies.
Try putting a hook-and-eye lock on the outside of the door.
Normally I'd say put it pretty high but it'll have to be low enough for the 5 yr old to reach.

We put one high on the door to the garage from the house.
It worked great!
Child (he was a toddler at the time) pulled something over to climb up to check it out but what he climbed on was in the way of the door opening so he still couldn't get out.
We were watching him (and took pictures) and then made sure he couldn't pull anything over to that door again.

A toilet lock? Why not just keep the bathroom door closed, that's what we did.

We used this one when our oldest was little.

It was still a huge pain in the butt. We used it for a few weeks and then just didn't worry about it. I think we went through periods where we tried to keep the bathroom door shut just in case, but neither of our sons touched the toilet. We just kept saying, "Yucky!" It was never an issue.

I wouldn't use anything.

We had one similar to Gidget's. It didn't last long. I think we removed it after about a week.

I think someone gave us a strap kind and that I don't think that one ever got installed.

My mother found anything like that a pain (she was stiff too and not that up to safety latches and usually broke that sort of thing trying to figure it out), and my husband didn't have the patience.

We didn't use any after that and other than the oldest one flushing the pee deflector off his potty seat (by accident) we never had issues.

Okay, F. B., here's the thing. Don't lock your toilet....if your little one can get in the bathroom at all they can turn on the water in the sink if they can climb up that high. They can climb over into the tub and get that water going and drown just as easy and they can tip over into the toilet and drown.

Babies aren't at risk as much as toddlers for this death though. So it's older ones that are in need of protection.

Go to Walmart or a hardware store like Home Depot and buy door knob protectors. Kids will figure them out soon enough but for now your little one can't reach them and hang on them enough to make the rubber part inside stick THEN turn the door knob protector while holding it down...they just don't have the needed strength and skills. By the time they're potty training and stuff you can take them off.

The part that is on the side...it has rubber on it so when you pinch or push on that area then turn the knob it turned the knob inside. Little ones can't do all that.
