My 20 month old daughter is having her tonsils and adnoids removed on Friday, January 19th. She is having this done because she has sleep apnea. Has anyone had an experience with T&A surgery? I have very nervous about her having this surgery.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sorry it has taken me so long to let everyone know what happened, but it has been rough. The sugery went well on Friday, January 19th. However, I am not happy with the doctor who done it. She let us go home on Saturday with Kassie only have drank 3 ounces. This was at 10:30 a.m. By 6:30 p.m. we were back at the hospital in the emergency room. She had a 103 temp and was dehydrated. They did a bunch of tests for infection and pneumonia and admitted her. We stayed at the hospital until Monday. She seemed fine. Well on Tuesday she got up throwing up. Needless to say she got dehydrated again. She also threw up some blood. We called the pediatrian and the ENT. We took her to see the ENT and everything was fine. the throwing up had irritated the surgery site. The ped sent us to the hospital again. Kassie was admitted for a third time. This time we stayed until Friday. So we pretty much spent a week at the hospital. It is Sunday now and she seems to be doing fine. We go to the ped tomorrow to have her checked out. Please pray that everything is fine. Thanks to everyone for your comments. they were greatly appreciated.

we just went through this with our 16 year old. The surgery itself was not really a big deal... yes it is major surgery, and we were terrified for her, but the sore throat and the misery after was so much worse. keep lots of thin bland liquids for her to drink. a lot of juices burned Lauren's throat, thicker drinks like creamed soups would get caught on her stitches and gag her. make sure you can talk to your doctor.call them if you have any questions!! The one thing that scared us was when Lauren was coughing up scabs and blood tinged mucus. The doctor said this was normal, she was pretty out of it for 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. Good luck!! We'll keep you all in our prayers.

We had the procedure 2 years ago. It is a very easy surgery. My daughter was 3 at the time. She was in and out in about 30 minutes. Then they gave her popsicles and ice and she was fine. They will send her home the same day and she will need pain medicine, but after about three days she will be back to normal. I hope everything goes well.

my son had this done in 09/2003. he did not have his tonsil removed but he did have his adenoids taken out. The surgery lasted all of 20 minutes and he was trying to play shortly there after. He wasn't bothered at all and it improved his snoring. he couldn't over exhert himself for the first few days but after that he was good as new. I hope this helps.

Hi T.. My son was also diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and had his enlarged tonsils and adenoids removed. He was only 14 months at the time and refused to drink anything or take medicine by mouth after the surgery, so we had to stay in the hospital for 3 days. Most kids do relatively well though. It will be painful for her so make sure to give her the pain medicine on time for the first few days. It's easier to control the pain before it gets too bad. If you wait for the pain to surface, it takes longer for the medicine to work.

The surgery itself only took about 30 minutes and is very routine. I know that it's still scary to think of your child having surgery! She'll do fine and you'll be glad once you see how much better she breathes at night. Emerson used to work so hard to breathe at night. I can definitely see a difference now but it took about 2-3 weeks. You have to wait for all of the swelling to go away so don't be alarmed if you don't see immediate results. Good luck!

T.,
Both of my daughters had this surgery. It was more difficult for me than for them. The one thing that we did differently with the second one was to speak with the anesthiesiologist and make arrangements to stay with my daughter until she was out.
With my first daughter, they pried her off me and took her screaming away. That was very bad.
Recovery was quick and they allowed me to nurse both in recovery which gave us a chance to reconnect and made transition much easier.

My daughter had her adnoids removed also. It was VERY nerve racking, but it was the best thing for her. She feels so much better now. She doesn't have nearly as many sinus infections. I know that your daughter is having the SX for different reasons, but we don't regret it at all. Just hang in there. It's an easy surgery and will be over before you know it. Good Luck!

Hi T.-
My daughter, Avery (2 1/2), just had her adnoids removed and tubes put in her ears (she didn't need her tonsils taken out-yet). Anyways, she did great! This was her second time with tubes and she did better this time than the first. When she came out of the surgery she was a little groggy and cried for a little while, but then she fell back to sleep and pretty much slept the rest of the day on and off. I'm sorry I couldn't help you with the tonsil part, but at least you now know how the adnoids go.

My son had them done two years ago when he was 6. It is a fairly easy surgery. Is she staying in the hospital over night? Make sure that they do NOT take out her IV until she is able to keep food down. Not to scare you, but they took out my son's IV to soon and then ended up having to put it back in and that was a nightmare as you can imagine. All in all she should do really well and just remember to feed her soft foods as she will tolerate. You should also get a prescription for some tylenol with codene from the dr before you leave that will help with any of the pain. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions please ask.

I will not sugar coat anything about that surgery. My daughter had it and she had a difficult time with it. She is 4 so maybe it will be different with your child, they say the older they get the worse it is. My daughter got admitted to the hospital for pain control and dehydration.

No disrespect to anyone but T&A is a lot different than just adenoids. I had my tonsils removed at 23 and it was quite painful. I did not take the pain medicine on schedule and waited to hurt. That was a mistake!

My 5 year old son had his tonsils and adenoids out last year. The surgery was a breeze, the first few days were great (too good to be true), then day 3-6 were really tough! He had a lot of pain. Just keep the fluids, popsicles and pain medicine going.

My youngest had tubes implanted and adenoids removed and he was fine that evening.

Having your tonsils removed is a tough surgery, but like someone else said the older you are the worse it is. My recovery at 23 was almost a month not a week like my son.

Good luck!!!
