My daughter is on her way to losing her first tooth. What kinds of things have you done for your children as they have lost a tooth? What's the going rate for a tooth these days?

What can I do next?

At our house, when you lose your first tooth, the Tooth Fairy brings you something special to keep your teeth in. She/he also leaves you a note about taking care of your teeth. My son got a Fang Dangle (http://www.etsy.com/shop/lilypadworkshop?section_id=6264395) just recently. Each child has their own special fairy also, so that's why sometimes fairies do different things or say different things to each child.

The Tooth Fairy brings you $3 for your very first tooth and $1 for teeth after that. And she doesn't give you as much money for teeth that have fillings, because she uses the old teeth to make new teeth for babies who will need them. (Reduce, reuse, recycle, right?)

We gave our oldest an note from the tooth fairy and $2. I had intended to get those gold dollar coins, but the tooth came out before I could. =)

If you don't worry about kids comparing what they get I'd do what your parents may have done and give $.25 or $.50 or $1.00 per tooth.

I've heard of people giving $5 or $10 or more for the very first tooth and then lowering the standards for other teeth.

I would like to give my girls $20 or $50 for their very first tooth and the rest maybe $1 a piece or I've considered getting the unique coins like the 1/2 dollar, silver dollar, golden colored coins or the $2.00 bill. What would be neat is getting the U.S. Mint coin sets the year they loose a tooth and each year after maybe.

There are lots of different things you could do.

There are a lot of cute "tooth holders" available now, my daughter has a little ceramic box with a lid and a painted fairy on it. She would put her tooth in it at night and in the morning there would be a gold coin it there! I don't think the dollar amount matters as much as the thrill of getting something special. Her Dad went to the bank and got a supply of $1.00 gold coins. She still has them all saved!

Like another mom posted, we do a ceramic tooth holder, and give the dollar coins. Just be sure to have a small stock pile of the coins handy though, because you never know when that tooth will finally come out! My daughter was just looking through her bank over the weekend, and was delighted to find and point out her tooth fairy coins. :-)
