I had to have work on my teeth for cavities when I was pregnant and my dentist waited til I was 5 months and then he gave me novicane but a different kind he used for pregnant women.
good luck! Tooth pain is horrible. I also had to take antibiotics while pregnant because i was very sick and the doctor said it would do more harm not to take them.
Hope you get relief soon,
J.

I am not sure about the anesthesia issue but I am sure it's worth it considering the pain you are in. Contact your oral surgean immediatly. As far as RH factor goes, I think you are not really informed as to what the ramifications mean. Oral surgery has nothing to do with being RH negative. The issues if that if your fetus is RH positive and his blood mixes with yours then you form antibodies to future babies. Have you gotten the Rhogam shot?

Hi- One time (not while pregnant), I had what I thought was a MASSIVE toothache, so I went to the dentist. It turns out I had a sinus infection (had it been tooth-reated, I am sure he would have been happy to treat and bill me, right?). My only advice would be to quickly find out exactly what the problem truly is (dental or nasal or whatever), and discuss the course of treatment with your doc.
When I was pregnant for the second time, I had an even worse sinus infection-only the 2nd in my life- but UNBEARABLE. I put off going to the doc and taking any meds (did a Neti pot, acupuncture, heated muscle pads, you name it), but I couldn't stand it and had to go to the GP. You are pretty far along, I was only 11 weeks or so at the time, so you may have more safe options.
Good luck. I know you must be suffering!! Hang in there!!

I would ask you dr and make sure your dentist knows. I am rh- as well and need to get the rhogam shot. They might give you one after the surgery to make sure the blood is allright. If not then it's only 4 more weeks or so until baby is here! Good luck!

I., please consult immediately with your dentist and your OB. Your dentist can tell you if it's 'simply' an achy tooth that should be removed or if you actually have an infection that can be treated safely with antibiotics until such time as you can undergo anesthesia for tooth removal. Your dentist should be familiar with treating pregnant patients in terms of what's recommended and not recommended, but you should definitely consult with your OB before beginning the dentist's recommended treatment. That's what I would do if I were in your situation. Good luck. Feel better.

As long as your ob says you can do it, why would you not
do it. No one on this board can tell you to do it only your
doc. I did it when I was 35 weeks. No problems at all.
Actually, the biggest relief of my life.

Hi I.:

The first trimester is a very delicate time for baby's brain development. I strongly believe the drugs could potentially harm you and baby.

My office offers Aromatherapy, Reflexology for pain management. In addition, I offer Reflexology at a holistic dental office in NYC to assist patients with pain and anxiety. I would happy to assist you, via a consultation. You may call the office at ###-###-#### and visit the site at www.wholecreations.com/wombfull.html.

As a suggestion, chew or rest a small piece of ice on area and see if that helps.

Best,
N.

Not sure what the effect of being rh negative is and you should certainly check IMMEDIATELY with your doctor. One of the most important things to do when you are pregnant is to keep up with your dental visits. It is so important b/c if you have an infection, which it sounds like you may, it can be very harmful to the baby. You absolutely MUST go to the dentist and deal with it. Of course, check w/ your OB first to see if there are things you can and can't do (obviously, x-rays won't be recommended....)

What you describe are indications that you have an active infection, which is worse than any treatment would be. There is no reason that you should not get at the very least an opinion from a Dentist or Oral Surgeon. They will consult with your ob-gyn to decide on the best course of treatment. The best possible time for active treatment is the middle trimester. Please seek professional help and not seek advice from lay people!

I.,

If you are having that much pain, there is absolutely NO WAY that you can NOT have this taken care of. Trying to "tough it out" until you deliver your baby is definitely not a very good idea, and not just because you're in pain.

Wisdom teeth can become abscessed very easily, if problems with them aren't tended to, and an untreated abscess may make you very sick, which would definitely NOT be good for you, or the baby!

My advice would be for you to see your obstetrician, and have him refer you to an oral surgeon to have this tended to as soon as possible. If you are having that much pain, then I'm sure that infection is setting in! I'm sure you're not the only person to have this happen when they were pregnant, and there must be something that they can do in order to extract the tooth that is causing this, without causing any harm to the baby!

Good luck, and I hope you get some relief soon, from the pain!

Hi I.,

First call your OB and let him/her know that you are having major tooth pain. They will tell you to go to the dentist and have that office call and consult throughout the whole process. Yes, you can have an x-ray or two without worry (they will double drape you). There is no reason to be going through all that pain. And who knows, maybe some antibiotics will help so that you can have the dental work done in a month. Also, you can take tylenol with codeine if your OB gives the thumbs up. That will help you sleep. Good luck!

I., you really need to consult with an oral surgeon, who can consult with your OB about the best course of treatment given the stage and circumstances of your pregnancy. It is these medical providers who can tell you what your options are and what is safest for you and your baby. You should not suffer when your doctors can give you information.
