Ladies- I went to the pharmacy at my lunchhour to buy some ambesol or orajel for our 5.5 month old, who seems to be teething in earnest. A co-worker warned I should probably speakw ith my ped first as hers had told her that these products may supress the gag reflex and lead to choking.

I remember orajel/ ambesol was used in our house growing up. Is this now taboo?

Thanks a bunch ladies.

What can I do next?

Oh my word!!! If you put the ora-gel on his uvula then yes, it will supress the gag reflex!!

I used Baby Tylenol - but I guess that's verboten now. Frozen washclothes to chew on work great too!!

I like Hylands natural teething gel. It works so much better than anbesol and orajel. There are no side effects, and no numbing, just pain relief. Our little guy will only use this and not the others. And theres no bad taste!

I remember hearing that awhile back, I think when my first one was teething. I asked my pediatrician about it back then, and again with my second. She said that yeah, it can numb the mouth...if they eat like the whole tube of it, or if your squirting it directly into their throat. Apply the numbing medicine on the tip of a Q-Tip. This makes sure that you get it in the right spot too. I used numbing medication with both the girls without any adverse affects. I would give them a dose of Ibuprofen, then put the numbing medication on to provide relieve until the Ibuprofen kicked in.

Good luck with the teething!

I've never heard of that.
You would likely have to dump the whole thing in her mouth for that to happen. just putting it on her teeth will not cause her to loose her gag reflex , that happens in the back of the throat.

I have used the orajel type products with no problems on my 2 kids. It is pretty easy to use on front teeth. It's harder to get in the right place with side teeth or molars. Putting it on a Q-tip helps a little. My kids also did well with the Hylands tablets. My daughter is 2 and getting 2 year molars. She picks up the tablets from my hand and takes them herself (she doesn't like other medicines). She also likes wet or frozen wash cloths.

That is the first I have ever heard of it. But I never found it worked that well with any of my children. They got pissed cause now there mouth was numb including the toung.lol I had some friends who swore by teething tablets. One guy told me once he use to give his child Beef jerky to naw on lol I usually gave my kids teething biscuits and gave them the crust from pizza and such.

I heard that too, and avoided the gels like the plague. I was able to get by with Hylands tablets and Tylenol. (My DD is a HORRIBLE teether too! She is in SCREAM mode for at least 2-3 days, sometimes up to a week or so) Then they pulled the Hylands from the market when she was about 7 months, and I got desperate. I tried the orajel, and my DD did just fine. I tried it out on myself (put some in the back of my throat, about 3x the dose I would give her) to see just how numb it actually gets you, and it's really not all that strong. You can feel the difference, but it didn't seem strong enough to cause choking. It is pretty hard to get it on the right spot, especially if baby doesn't want your fingers in her mouth!!! My DD likes the flavor just fine, but not a fan of me poking my fingers in there. She fought me on it one time, and wound up with the dose on her lips instead of in her mouth, and it was pretty funny to watch actually. She was poking her mouth and smacking her lips... tooth pain completely forgotten. :P

The only other thing my DD wants when teething is her mesh feeder. I will either put a banana in it and freeze it, or a couple ice cubes. She will NOT chew on teethers, rags, or anything else.
