Toys for 1 Yr Old Boy

Believe it or not, I am already making a list for my kids for Christmas. My mom always seems to start early and she always asks me what to get the kids so I want to be prepared. Also, we are going to be moving in a month and I know how fast the Christmas season will get here when we are busy getting a house in order. Anyway... I am at a loss as to what to buy my son, who will be 14 months at Christmas. I hate FisherPrice toys and so do my kids. They all seem to play the same melodies and do the same thing. I want something different for him. My daughter was easy, she loved baby dolls and all things girly. What are some things that your boys played with at that age. Or, ideas for some gender neutral stuff too. Thanks for the help.

What can I do next?

My son is 7 and he has just about every toy/game known to man. Pound for pound, the best toy he ever had (time spent wise) was a set of stacking blocks out of really rigid cardboard with numbers 1-10 on the side as well as illustrations for the numbers on the other. I think I got them at Marshall's or TJ Maxx for about 10 bucks.
I don't think you can go wrong with basics like wooden/cardboard blocks, MegaBlocks, simple wooden puzzles, musical instruments, etc.

Have to ditto: things to push - shopping cart, lawnmower are two of my son's favorites.
He also has a doorway - not sure who makes it, but DS crawled through that thing a thousand times a day when he got it.
Also, riding toys. We have a riding "bike" from V-Tech with buttons, songs. DS still uses it and he's 2.

Finally, the Cozy Coupe! Every kid I know LOVES theirs. DS got it for his first birthday and it's the toy that all the kids still fight over in playgroups.

As simple as it sounds sometimes blocks are the best present. Besides thinking of things that talk or play music, try thinking of things that encourage products and activity.

I personally can not stand all the toys with the bells & whistles, my son gets bored of them too.

I know it is a fisherPrice product but they have a good amount of block sets that are big and easy to build things with. MY son loves them. They've helped him learn some coordination and also actually helped him learn the difference between his colors.

I agree with the blocks. My kids loved the foam blocks.

Anything he can push is fun. My son loved my daughter's shopping cart. He would load up his trains and trucks and push them all over the house. There are plenty of "boy" things to push out there, but this held his "stuff" and that's what he liked about it.

We found tools by L. Tykes that were awesome. He loved "helping" dad. We even got him his own tool belt.

Finally, Duplos are great for this age, too.

You've inspired me to get organized. I'm starting my list today, too! Good luck with your move.

On my son's second Christmas he was 13 months old. I was sooo sick of anything musical, that I avoided and noise maker toys like the plague. :) We still have a lot of Fisher Price stuff, but I avoid the noisy toys. We got him a few L. People toys - the Castle and the Pirate Ship. At 4 1/2 he still plays with that. (Of course at 14 months it was more pushing buttons and mouthing the pieces than pretend play). Another toy that has held up over the years and still gets used is the Fisher Price Tuff Rumblin Dump Truck. The only noise it makes is a clicking sound when it's pushed. At one, my son was the perfect height to push it around. He loved that thing and still plays with it today, in fact it's in my living room right now. http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=10&e=product&a... We also got my son a L. vacuum, broom and dust pan, so he could "help" with chores. For him, we found a red devil vacuum and a L. broom set that was blue. For my daughter this past Christmas, I went to the Dollar Tree and bought a broom, we just cut the handle short. That one seems to be better suited for the kids. My son liked to push things. So we also got him the traditional Corn Popper push toy. And the one toy that both of my kids loved, loved, loved from about 1 yo - 2 is the Sesame Street giggle Sound Station. Mine are not Christmas presents, in fact I found them used. I have two different versions. I have also found some and given them to others (I seem to run into them at Goodwill a lot) . The kids love mashing the buttons. I have scotch taped over the speakers to make it quieter. That thing went to the grocery store as a distraction and was often in my car for entertainment. http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=10&e=product&a... Every one that we have given away has become a favorite toy. Merry Christmas!

Get Duplo blocks. Most kids like this and they are safe and can not be swallowed. Trucks or anything that lights up are good. My son is almost three and these are some of the things he liked to play with.

My son is 13 months now. He loves his push toys and anything with wheels. He loves pushing around his walkers and putting his sippy cup and other toys in for a ride. He loves the big cars and trucks and buses- L. Tykes style- that are strong enough for him to stand, bend down and push all around the house. He also likes 2 piece puzzle sets where you just have to match the front of an animal with the back of an animal to hear its sound. I second the L. People sets, even though you said no Fisher Price. We have the farm and he loves it. It makes some animal sounds, but there are no annoying songs. And I like that it encourages more imaginary play. Megablocks are popular with his playgroup. LeapFrog toys seem to have more variety of songs and things they can do, but I was really disappointed with how quickly they broke. And calling their customer service doesn't get you anywhere.

Foam blocks for the bath tub
Shopping cart/push cart (FAO Schwartz has a nice wooden one, if you are anti-plastic)

Anything Melissa and Doug

But honestly, at 14 months, they don't need much. Maybe ask for spring/summer clothes, or money for college account?

L. people stuff is great, I have a home daycare and ALL the kids love playing with them. There are so many sets and they can be combined together or played with separately. Duplo is also another favorite with kids.
