Toys for a 4 Month Old

I have a beautiful, active 4 month old little girl. She is very alert and interested in surroundings but seems to be at this stage where she is not easily entertained for any period of time. My husband and I give her floor time, tummy time, have various toys, stuffed animals, swing etc. Looking for any toys that someone has used that their infant seemed to really enjoy. She loves music, loves the baby Einstein DVD's (hopefully that is not too sad that we have her watch a video or Sprout channel-she loves it).

What can I do next?

We have a 4 month old little girl as well. We got a Munchkin Mozart Magical Cube. It has 5 instruments plus the full orchestra. Each side has an instrument you can press to play. You can add more instruments, take them away or play the full orchestra. I think it plays 6 different tunes. It's brightly colored and flashes. My daughter can't quite press the buttons yet, but she loves it and tries to reach for it. They have them at Target--it was more than I wanted to spend ($20) but it was the only toy we bought her and I just love the music it plays. Hope this helps.

I think it is just the age. Mine won't sit in the swing for very long anymore either. They are so busy learning stuff now and wanting to move. I hate to say it but she loves watching football on TV. We had her on her tummy while a game was on and she was mesmerized. Tonight at a restaurant they had a game on w/ the TV pretty far away and she was totally watching it.

Hi C.,
I agree with the others in that the baby gyms are great, as is the exersaucer. The other thing we've gotten a lot of mileage out of is the Fisher Price Classical Chorus Piano. I don't think they make them anymore, but I know they have them on ebay and craigslist a lot; they're not expensive. Basically, it's a piano that starts like a baby gym where baby can lay under it and grab/kick the hanging stuff. Then it converts to a sitting position, and finally, a stand-up piano. We got ours 4+ years ago for my first son, and it's something my 9mo son got into right away. The music isn't annoying either, which is a bonus for mom. :)

We also like the small stackable rings/shape sorters. Later on your daughter will figure out how to "use" them, but in the meantime if the pieces are the right size, they're also great for practicing those fine motor (grabbing, etc.) skills. Babies also love textures--try tummy-time on a variety of fabrics to see how she swipes at them. Oh--and one other thing is my kids LOVED naked time. We put down one of those cheap plastic shower curtains (easy to clean for accidents), and they loved to roll around and feel the material. (Just make sure she stays supervised and can keep her head off the ground.) Happy playing!!

My active boy loved the baby gyms that have things hanging down over him, a Sassy brand mirror that had things to play with along the sides, and a Whoozit toy that he loved from 2 months until he was over a year old. At about 4 months he also started standing in his exersaucer, which provided endless entertainment. He had the Baby Einstein one, and he still likes to play with the toys on it, even though he hasn't stood in it for over 6 months. (He's 18 months now)

She'll get a kick out of just about anything...I gave my daughter a small tupperware filled about 2/3 with grape nuts and put the lid on. She's almost 14 months now and still enjoys a good shake every time she runs across it. She was also very entertained by Baby Einstein. The movies are really neat.

Both of my sons just wanted to ride on me in a sling. We went and walked at the park and the mall and around the house doing laundry. The other thing that they liked were those vibrating chairs. Hope that helps.

My babies love the things that stand over the baby with toys hanging down. I think they're called baby gyms. By 4 months your baby should be able to try and grab them and kick at them. The newer ones have colorful pads that the baby can lie on, with toys and things that they can play with when they can roll over. Some even play music and have flashing lights.
