Trace minerals are very important if you're going to be sweating at all. When our bodies perspire, we sweat out the electrolytes and minerals (salts!) our bodies NEED to function. Without minerals in your water, if you JUST drank water, you run the risk of getting water poison. You'll feel nauseous, headachey, dizzy, etc.

I dislike Gatorade as well, because of all of the bad ingredients in them (high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and dyes, etc). Water with trace minerals is the best to drink.

Trace minerals are good for children. Not 40 drops for them, of course. I would only put 3-5 drops of trace minerals in a glass of water for kids.

As long as you're sweating, you can't have too much, so don't worry about that.

By the way, if you ever DO get woozy feeling after a workout, drink real lemonade (lemon, water, sugar) with SEA salt in it. It re-balances your electrolytes.

Good luck!

While agree with replacing any depleted minerals, (although usually just a banana and plain water are enough) my biggest question or thought I guess, is I'm not sure I would ever just take anyone's word for what they are putting in my water. I don't care who they are.
How do you know exactly what it was? Did s/he ask if you were taking any supplements? What meds are you on?
I'm not a neurotic skeptic but I am an RN and wellness educator, and I just find that situation, at least as you've described it unnerving to me.

i am a fitness instructor and we are told NEVER to give or prescribe any types of supplements/medication, etc. do not let anyone put anything in your food/beverages. you can get anything you need from foods/ plain water or sports drinks. this person has no idea what you are taking already. perhaps you took a multivitamin this morning? we teach bootcamp at my gym and it does not req. participants to drink eat or drink anything special. i would politely refuse, if they insist, go w/ your gut. it's a boot camp class, not real military basic training. (btw, they don't give you mineral drops in real military boot camp, either!)

i dislike gator-ade types of electrolytes and have always just had pure water. however, now that my runs are getting longer, i'm getting a lot of advice from seasoned distance runners that water is really not enough. sounds like your trainer is doing the right thing.
good luck with boot camp! i did it about 10 years ago and it was awesome. i should do it again.

Plain water is enough for most of us even when working out hard. If you are running a marathon or something of that level of intensity, then your body will need you to restore minerals lost through sweating. The minerals added by the trainer won't hurt, but may or may not be necessary. Most of us get plenty of salt in our diets without adding more.
