Transition from Bottle to Cup

My 18 month old gets three 7 oz. bottles of milk a day. He does not want to drink the milk from a sippy cup, only juice. It's not that he's attached to the bottles, I just can't think of any other way to give him his milk. Any suggestions?

My brother told my nephew at this age that it was "milk juice" in the sippie cup. My nephew drank it happily! Having your child use the sippie cup may rely solely on your terminology and enthusiasm.

You may also consider skipping the sippie cup for milk and going straight to the regular cup. Most 18 month olds have the motor skills to handle it, so why not? It can become a special thing to do at the table, and your child may get a lot of confidence by accomplishing it. Prepare for some spills by filling the cup with only 1 or 2 ounces to start. Have fun!

Hi B.,

This was the age that we transitioned our daughter from the bottle to the sippy cup. She was terrible at drinking from the traditional cups that you have to tip them up to get the liquid. I found that she did great from the Nuby straw cups. You can get them at Target, Babies r Us, and Walmart. Our daughter really only drink milk with dinner now, she gets a lot of her dairy from yogurt and cheese. She drinks water during the day, with some juice.

Good Luck!

Hi!
Can't you just put the milk in a sippy cup? I just give my daughter a sippy cup of milk with each of her meals. They don't need bottles of milk anymore after a year. I am sure he will get a sufficient amount of milk with a sippy cup. I am not sure on the amount of milk they need to get a day, but my ped. said as long as she gets some milk and cheese and yougurt each day(if she doesn't drink much milk) she will be fine!

Good Luck!

At 18 months I don't think you have to be so specific about your son's milk intake. My ped said once she was completely on solid foods and over a year, the bottle should be gone. However, if you are still concerned talk to your ped. I've noticed on some of my daughter's sippy cups (on the bottom) it says how many ounces of liquid the cup holds. Or you could use a measuring cup and pour an ounce of water in at a time and make a mark on the cup with permenant marker.
