Transitioning 1 Year Old from Formula and Bottle to Milk and Sippy Cup

My baby turned one year old yesterday and he will not use his sippy cup to drink out of. He can chew on it and throw it pretty well. I have tried using whole milk in his bottle and he will not take it that way. He will slurp down a warm bottle of formula though. If anyone has any transitioning ideas i would be grateful.
Thanks

I would just say to keep offering it to him at meals, maybe try taking the stopper out so he gets the milk right away, maybe even warm the milk you put in it. Eventually he'll come around, some kids just need extra time to warm up to new things. With my first son I used a formula made for babies aged 12 months and older, so you may want to look into that until he comes around on the milk thing. The stuff I used ws made by Enfimil.

Good Morning C., Happy 1st Birthday little man.

C. he will let you know when he is ready to give up his bottle. Until then don't force it hon or worry about it.
There isn't a Carved in stone rule anywhere that says a child has to be weaned from a bottle at age 1. Unless it is in a Dr.'s medical book on a shelf somewhere...lol
Our eldest had his until he was 19 months, then he gave it up himself. Our youngest was almost 2 when he gave his up.
I think they did pretty well . 34 & 32 now and well adjusted...lol
Our youngest gr. son is 17 months and still takes a bottle at nap time and bed time. Will use a sippy sometimes during the day, but he has to be in the mood for it. Only takes water or juice in a sippy.

If you want to switch him to whole milk and not formula you have to do it gradually. Nothing wrong with formula either except for the cost. You can use a little milk in his water for the formula and over time decrease the water and formula. It's hard for little ones sometimes to just switch over cold turkey. Tummy aches can occur if you do that.
Keep warming his bottle. Corbin will be 4 next month and still like warm milk in his cup first thing in the morning. As does Zane in his frist bottle in the morning.

God Bless you C. and just take it slow hon.

K. Nana of 5

warm up the whole milk in the sippy cup, so it's like a warm bottle. Also another good sippy cup is the Nuby cups (you can get them anywhere, like Walmart or Target) because it has a soft top, sippy that if the baby chews on, he will get liquid out of it, instead of having to suck to get liquid out.

My baby turned one on the 5th of February and I had been having the same issue. My friend suggested that I do a half milk and half formula and then phase the formula out this way. It seems to be working she has been taking the milk in the sippy cup a little easier this way as well.

Hi C., A few ideas that helped me were slowly mixing milk into his formula in the bottle. One day give him 25% milk / 75% formula, once he's used to that slowly add more and more milk until he's drinking all milk. Also, try giving him warm milk if he's used to drinking warm formula. Then slowly warm it less and less until he will drink it cold. Also, if you haven't tried a Nuby sippy cup with the soft nipple like top, I'd suggest trying it. I've heard it works for lots of kids and it was the only sippy cup my daughter would drink milk out of. Good luck and just know it will take awhile to get him fully transitioned.

When my son turned 1, the pedi told us to just give him milk in a sippy cup and that's it. My son wasn't fond of it, but I knew that if I kept going back to the bottle he'd never take the cup. I only offered the cup and after a few days, he was fine. You can try a straw. It's sometimes easier than a sippy. Give hime a juice box and when he's trying to drink, squeeze the box. They pick up on it in no time. He may then be more willing to use his sippy cup.

Hope this helps.

Try warming up the whole milk also. I found a great sippy cup by Nuk - at Target or Walmart.

C.,
I transitioned my son from breast milk to cow's milk so I am not sure if formula would be different but I will tell you what worked for us. It was suggested to me to mix the two milks. I started with mostly breast milk and added some cow's milk until the ratio became more cow's milk than breast milk. He didn't have any problems with the transition. They say that the breast milk and formulas are much sweeter and that is why it sometimes causes a problem. If I were you I would not introduce juice at this point because it is also sweet and another reason not to drink the milk! Just keep trying with the sippy cup, he will catch on soon. Good Luck!

Yes it can be hard to transition from anything. But I do have to agree with most of the other women on here. Nuby's are great sippies. And I did the same thing with the milk, start with 3/4 formula and 1/4 milk. It dose a little bit of time. It works and before you know it, he will be drinking milk. Good luck and be patient. It will all work out in the end.

Try warming the milk a little if he's used to his formula being warm. My son loved his nuby cups, they are soft like the bottle but get them use to the shape. Then gradually introduce the regular hard top.

I had the same problem with both my sons. I tried not holding the cup for them all day but at the end of each day when not a drop had been drunk, I caved and held it out of worry for dehydration. My daughters- never an issue. My Dr. said I could add a little chocolate syrup to the milk until my sons drank it. I added the smallest it took for them to really like it, held it for them to get the taste of it and then they eventually loved it. Over time I added less and less and now, at 5 and 7, chocolate milk is just a treat when I'm feeling nice. Probably by 18 months they were taking it plain.
When you first add the chocolate, add a very very small amount and keep adding a little more each time he tries it until he likes the taste- that way you aren't overloading him with sugar.

First try a different sippy cup...one with a soft spout. My youngest couldn't make the hard spout ones work until she was a little older. Second, we gradually changed to milk from formula. We would put 3/4 formula to 1/4 milk in the cup. Every few days we would add more milk and less formula. It took about two weeks to completely transition her to milk. Since formula taste so much different than milk you have to do it gradually. Good luck and God Bless.

Gerber soft top sippy cups, and using milk for part of the water to mix formula. It's the way we transitioned my daughter and son both, though we didn't discover the gerber cups until my daughter came along. She wouldn't take the nuby's. the gerber also have grips on them, and are shaped a lot like a bottle. Good luck!!! And if it takes some time, don't stress about it, kids pick up on our moods a lot more than we realize. My daughter wasn't completely transitioned until 14 months.

W. Ie actually did the switch gradually to milk. We put in 1 oz of milk with the formula for 3 days then added 2oz for 3 days and con't this way until it was all milk and no formula. It worked for us good luck.
