Treating House for Fleas Around Little Kids

I found the second flea in a month upstairs in our house. I know two fleas aren't many, but where there's one or two there's bound to be more! The dogs don't usually come upstairs and I guess I let one of their meds for Frontline lapse. My question is...what's safe to put in the carpets (up AND downstairs) that my 16-month-old can crawl around in (and my 4-year-old can roll around in) but will get rid of flea and/or flea eggs? I'd rather act before it's a bad problem! Help!

So What Happened?

Wow! Some interesting ideas! I haven't done anything about it yet, because I haven't found anymore so I'm in denial.

This is what our vet told me: Buy seven cheap flea collars. Take one, cut it up and put it in the vacuum container/bag. Vacuum all of the carpets, even the edge of the beds, under windows, etc. When done, toss the bag out. Repeat this everyday for a week.

For some reason, salt usually works.

Oh how I wish I would have seen these other tips when we had the same problem (maybe a bigger problem, WAY more than two fleas). We ended up throwing away a new dog bed, having the house professionally exterminated and vacuuming like a bunch of madmen. But it also worked. Good luck!

They say that baking soda kills them. You can do that leave it for 15 min then vacuum it up. Make sure once you are done you take the vacuum bag out of the house and throw it away. I'd repeat the process in 2 weeks.

About 3 years ago we brought fleas home from someone else's house. My son was about 20 mo at the time and I couldn't find anything that worked that was okay while he was there. I ended up getting the flea bombs, then vacuumed a few times, used my carpet cleaner (one of the machines) with only hot water (the soap often stays in the carpet-per my husband who used to clean carpets 40 hrs a week!, and I wanted the chemicals gone-didn't want to add any). Then I just wiped everything down with a chlorox or lysol wipe. Even having two dogs still didn't bring ANY fleas back, and no one got sick, plus the house looked great, and I didn't have to worry about whether it was working or not.
