hello ladies!! I am trying tok plan a short weekend trip to the grand canyon and wondered if and of you had advice on what to do, where to stay, etc. We are looking driving up early staying in some hotel and coming back after spending the next day out and about. I have 2 small kids ages 1 and 3. I think they would like the train I have heard about but after looking at the site I'm a bit worried to ride the trian 2 hr 15 min and then stuck at the canyon for 4 hrs...what if they need to rest? I don't know what i'm LOOKING for but thought maybe we could stay in williams and drive to the canyon ourselves? I'm not from phx and just thought i would ask for moms advice!

What can I do next?

I have a 4 year old son. My hubby and I went to the Grand Canyon about a year ago and my mother-in-law watched my son for us. We didn't do the train, but we did do a lot of walking around the rim and there are so many places that are not fenced or barricaded off. I am glad we went by ourselves b/c I would have been a nervous wreck and not enjoyed myself. However, I did see other families there with children and they seemed to be doing fine.

If you can wait and are looking to plan an overnight trip, you should look into the Polar Express train ride in Williams. It is a family tradition of ours. The train ride is about 90 minutes long and it is based on the movie and book. It caters to the little ones. It is in Williams and you could do both (polar express train ride and stop by the grand canyon for a look see). The polar express starts in November and runs through mid-January. They have a hotel too and have a lot of fun childrens' activities. They run a package deal - for 4 people it runs about $300 for an overnight stay at their hotel, train ride, breakfast, dinner and $20 gift certificate to be used in their gift shop. You can't beat it. We love it. It would be a great memory or start of a new tradition:) The website is www.thetrain.com

Good luck:) Hope that helps:) Welcome to ARIZONA:)

There are alot of great stuff to do out there and explore. Me and my husband went to the grand canyon for our honeymoon that was about six years ago though. The kids will need rest to, but there are places for you to have them do that. Strollers is a must. If they get tired you can put them in the stollers and sometimes they fall asleep. Have fun.

I'm a new mother and haven't taken our daughter to the Canyon yet, but my husband and I have enjoyed several train trips. We stay in Williams at the Travelodge. Nice hotel within a few minute drive across town to the train station. The train is a great way to see the scenery. The seats are one solid piece like a school bus and can be reversed so you can sit across from your other party members. They walk through with a musician, give history and pass out drinks. Most children that have been on the train have done well. On the ride back they have a train robbery which is quite fun. Up at the canyon you will disembark right by the El Tovar Hotel which has a lobby, and restaurant, plus there are several other eateries, bathrooms, etc. Best of luck! :)

The Williams train is great for older adults. I was on the inagural run about ( 20 ) years ago with Barry Goldwater. It is not, absolutely not for children! I would not recommend it for anyone under ~ ( 15 ) years old. It is about history, and anyone not old enough to appreciate and understand the value and beauty of history should not take the Williams, Arizona train to the Grand Canyon.

Hi J.. I took a trip to the canyon last year with our 2 kids the 4 and 8. My inlaws also came. We did the train in Williams. The website is www.thetrain.com the kids loved it. The hotel was nice and kid friendly. They had a gun show in the morning which the children loved and got to participate. The train ride for me was the best part. Read all about it on their website. My children still talk about the trip. We walked around and had luch. becareful their are areas that dont have fences. It made me nervouse but we were prepared and kept an eye on the kids. I did see some parents with those leash things on. smart idea. Dont let that stop you their is plenty to do and see. Have fun and good luck.
