Triple Digits in PHX with a 1 Year Old.

I have read some of the older posts on this topic but there does not seem to be a lot for this age group.
Basicly I have a 15 month old who likes to play outside. We have a pool, swing and sandbox but I am pregnant again and it is getting difficult for me to keep up with him in the heat. I can deal with not much over 90 degrees so even the suggestions of going to the zoo in the early morning are out. It is too hot for me.

What can I do to keep him exercised? We used to go to the park for an hour every other day as he loves to run, climb, slide, etc. but none of the parks are lit at night in this city. All the school playgrounds have fences around them:( My son's playtimes are pretty much between 10am-2pm and 6pm-10pm. We live in the city center and do not travel to the suburbs as he is awful in the car.

We do not do playlands in things like McDonald's because they are too dirty. Phoenix Children's Museum is too expensive and busy. So far the best I've worked out is to spy a nearly empty office complex and let him climb the stairs up and elevator down several times. The buildings are kept clean despite being empty and there are no big kids to squish him.

Does anyone know of any parks in the city lit at night? Preferably ones with seperate equipment for toddlers. Or indoor activity centers kept CLEAN? Where I grew up there were Leaps N Bounds, Discovery Zone, etc.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for your suggestions. I have not been able to find any information on lit parks in the evening so if anyone has that, it would be awesome!. I checked out all the places that were suggested. They are all either in the suburbs, outdoors or too expensive with the exceptions of the library and The Play Factory! We both LOVE books and have been many times but it is not an appropriate place to exercise him:) The Play Factory is a lot farther away than we usually go but we are going to give one of the toddler specific days a try. In case anyone else happens across this I live in mid-town and we rarely leave it and central Phoenix.

City of Phoenix has mommy & me type classes. There's also My Gym, Gymboree, mall play areas, splash pads, Imagination Avenue, Makutu's Island, Arizona Science center, Jambo Park, The Play Fort, Play Factory, the children's area/story time at the library. Not sure about what parks are lit at night - you may want to check out City of Phoenix's parks site and/or call for that info.

Been there, done that a little one during the summer & I learned to be a little more flexible. You've got a lot of "no's" on your list, which is a disadvantage for you. Germs are everywhere, and he will need to learn how to adapt to being in the car.

In any event, I hope I helped. I know it sucks, but you'll figure it out if you open up your options.

I'd give up on the idea of lit parks at night - it's well over 100 degrees at 6pm in the summer, and it will still be over 95 at 10pm most of the time.

Not very helpful, I recognize. The only time we went outside here with a kid that age was to get in the pool, after 5pm when ours is in the shade. It just wasn't worth getting everyone hot in the car to go someplace intended for older kids when he was just as happy jumping off the couch.

What about the water parks? Are they open yet? Children's Museum is definitely too expensive. We went there one time and not only we had to pay for our son, which we understood, but we had to pay for both me and my husband too. We had to pay just to sit and watch our child play. Crazy. We never went back. Family petting zoo? Not sure if there is one near you. We like to go to the train park up in north scottsdale. If you are not too far away from the Shea/Scottsdale road area, I can send you the link for that park. I know it's around there. My husband usually drives, so I'm not too familiar with where it is exactly. I don't like the playlands either. Ick! When they use to have the ball pits, my sister found a dirty diaper in that section. Gross.
You can let him do finger painting there at the house....my two year old loves to do that. I sometimes will build a little tent house for my boys to play in, using a sheet and draping it over stuff to make a tent, and sometimes using cardboard boxes. When we have big stuff to unpack, I usually take those boxes and cut holes in them and make a little maze for the boys to play in. They love it! Hope these ideas help you. I don't like the heat either. I use to love to go outside in the sun....not anymore. lol Perhaps that could be because of my age....ha ha ha
