Trush and Reaction to Diflucan

It all started with being very determined to nurse, then sore and bleeding nipples, pain and then thrush in/on the nipple. Got the two week treatment with Diflucan,, the APNC cream and gentian violet. My two week old baby at the time got an RX for nystatin, although she had no symptoms. Five days on the nystatin we figured that she was hurting from it, so the dr said to stop the treatment since she had no signs of yeast in her mouth. We did and things returned back to normal. I was still on Diflucan, but did not put the baby back to breast. I am just pumping and feeding her from the bottle. My pain went away, although I am still having a little itching and the tip of my nipples is still red. I consulted a dermatologist and I was assured that there’s no visible yeast.

Just past Friday (7 weeks old now) I saw the thrush in baby’s mouth. Oh, no. After being so diligent about sterilizing everything once a day, not putting her to breast, taking probiotics both of us… and she still has it. Since she didn’t do well on nystatin, we got the Rx for Diflucan for her. Today I gave her the first dose and she seems to be in a lot of pain again. Maybe stomach ache. She tries eating, but then she’s very unsettled at the bottle, does not finish anymore. She screams and no amount of rocking, burping, belly time or anything we do seems to help. She’s trying to pass gas and she pooped more times then usual (this could be diarrhea)…

My husband and I are exhausted from the lack of sleep, trying to help her and tend to our 3 years old at the same time. We have no other help. We know this will too pass eventually, but can’t just wait and see our little girl suffering in the meantime. Here are my questions for you mamas that had similar experience:
- If the Diflucan is what’s causing this reaction, how else are we going to get rid of the yeast not just locally but internally?
- Could the breastmilk I pump have yeast in it and that’s how she got the thrush in her mouth?
- Any other babies out there that can’t tolerate nystatin or diflucan?
- If I treat the thrush in her mouth with gentian violet or grapefruit seed extract, would the internal yeast be treated as well or is it going to show up again?

We’ll have to call the ped again tomorrow, but wanted to hear from you all first.
Thank you!

Hi A.,

Sugar feeds yeast. That's the only way it can survive. All sugar needs to be removed from your diet and hers. You need to be sugar free (that means no white breads, white rices, white potatoes as well as sugary drinks and foods). This means off sugar "cold turkey" and I promise you that there will be withdrawals and it will be difficult. There is sugar in almost everything processed or in restaurants.

You also need to be on a good probiotic/prebiotic as well. I can recommend one if you like. There are stronger things that can remove it from your system but they are not recommended during nursing.

Candida/yeast is rampant in American society because of our eating habits. It breaks down the immune system and creates disease. I guarantee you that if you get the sugar out of your diet, you will feel so much better (even if you don't think you feel bad now) and will never return to it!

God bless,

M.

my son and i have been struggling with a ductal yeast infection since he was born 10 weeks ago. he hasn't had thrush but has been on nystatin. however, i have had people suggest using gentian violet, grapefruit seed extract, probiotics for baby or you could break open a probiotic pill wet your finger and rub it around her mouth. i think these things are worth trying. also i changed to a yeast free diet and have continued breastfeeding and take many supplements. good luck to you and your little one i know how horrible this can be.

Put her back on the breast... coat her mouth and your nipple with gentian violet. When she is done nursing, wash your nipples with diluted vinegar and try to limit the sugars you eat. Also, start back up on probiotics for both of you and start eating 100% organic yogurt like StoneyField Farm's.

Along with what Erin H. states below, also limit your sugar/carb intake. Avoid alot of fruits/juices. Praying for quick healing :)
