Trying to Get Pregnant - Fairfield,CT

Hi,

My husband and I are trying to have a second baby. We have only been trying for 3 months, but I am in my early 40's, so I am worried that we will have difficulties. I got pregnant with my first child at 40 on our second month of trying. We were very lucky, I know, but maybe my luck has run out.
I don't think that I want to try fertility drugs, so if we can't get pregnant on our own, I'll probably give up after a while.
Can any one tell me if there are supplements that I can be taking or something that I can be doing to increase my chances of getting pregnant? I have already done all the obvious things (seen my ob/gyn for a check up, started prenatal vitamins 4 months ago, stopped all caffeine and alcohol, charted my ovulation signs, used ovulation predictor tests, had sex when I think I'm ovulating, I eat healthful foods, and get a little exercise). My monthly cycle is still fairly regular (26-28 days) although my period is pretty short.
My husband is pretty fit and healthy, but unfortunately he doesn't have the most balanced diet in the world. He doesn't eat junk, but he doesn't eat enough fruits and vegetables in my opinion, so I got a good multivitamin for him yesterday. Is there something more that I can be doing to help my odds?
I'll probably call my doctor next week ans see what she suggests, but I wanted to see what other women have experienced first.
Thanks for any advice.- B.

What can I do next?

You are doing all the right things another thing I did was use the Clearblue Easy fetility monitor I found it to work better than the predictor kits you buy a the drug store. It is a bit pricey but well worth it considering I bought ovulation predictor kits at 20 a pop for almost a year. I used it for my first baby as I had been trying for almost a year with no resutls, I was desperate. I came across this monitor doing searches on the web, I got prego the second month I used it. Best of luck to you on trying to get pregnant.

Have you tried charting your temps to see when you are actualy ovulating? It took us longer too b/c I thought I was ovulating later, but it was actually a little earlier in my cycle. Once I knew & treated it like a science experiment :), I got pregnant right away.

Hi B.,
I got pregnant with my first at 27 and it took almost a year. Everyone is different, so your body might just need some extra time. That being said, I recently saw a story about alternative medicine to help with getting pregnant. I can't remember the name of the book now (sorry) but it was written by a medical doctor who had trouble getting pregnant herself. Many women claim to have had great results after following her advice. Maybe it is worth a try to check out the library or book store?

HI! I am a naturopathic doctor and there are several things you can do to increase your chances of getting pregnant -- check your basal body temperature and make sure it is over 97.8 F (36.5C) -- if it isn't then your thyroid is underfunctioning or you are carried a toxic load which is slowing your meatabolism down too much. There are many things to address eachof these areas in natural medicine. Second, make sure you are taking 3000 mg of healthy oil (fish and plant based) daily along with a good multi vit/min supplement.

also check out the TTCover40 site (trying to conceive over 40)--a close friend runs it.

STaying relaxed and open is important (yoga, exercise, etc. are great)-- the more we stress, the more burden we put on our bodies, the more poison we produce through poor digestion adn nutrient absorption, the more tired our thyroid and adrenal glands become, the lesss likely we will conceive.

Good luck, M. Meyer, Ottawa

I dont know the science behind it, or if its purely coincidence, but try Folic Acid. A friend of mine tried for two years to get pregnant. Nothing. She took folic acid and the following month she conceived. WITH TWINS!!
When we decided to try to get pregnant I started taking folic acid and we conceived on the first try both times.
And my cousin took Folic Acid and she conceived right away.
Like I said, maybe its purely coincidence, but it cant hurt, right? Its something your body (and your baby-to-be) needs. :)
Good Luck!!

hi B., we did the temp charting and the pee sticks too, it made me crazy. plus wasnt so accurate, i have a long cycle. i found that the cervical mucus is the best predictor...might be tmi for some, but... when you are ovulating, your cervical mucus will be more plentiful and have "egg white" consistency. the 3 or 4 days during & right after this is the time to go for it. and lay on your back for a while afterward and relax. wouldnt hurt to put a pillow under your butt (not your lower back, you want to tilt the right way, know what i mean?) during (more fun, too :) and after. and if the other stuff you are doing stresses you out, i would ditch it for a while, stress has a huge effect. you can also check out "taking charge of your fertility" by toni weschler (sp?).... though the temp and the cervical mucus are the general ideas in her book, i would only read it if you think it wont stress you. .... i heard grapefruit juice helps, i dont know. try to relax and have fun. best of luck to you.

Hi B.,
I know that trying to conceive can be very difficult and emotionally draining. I have a reproductive anomoly called uterus didelphus...I have 2 uteri! I am a freak of nature! LOL!

But on a lighter note, I can help make your conceiving expreience with your husband be more fun again...because I know it can be very stressful. You should try to have fun with sex again and let nature take it's course. I sell sensual oils, lotions, creams, lingerie, and adult toys. You can even have a passion party in the privacy of your own home...give me a buzz! Good luck and I will pray to the fertility Goddess for you! :)

We used Chaste Tree supplements...it is supposed to help your general fertility, but only up until ovulation. Do you chart online? Can I see your charts? There may be something going on...perhaps you have a short luteal phase? Are you still breastfeeding?

It took us 18 months to get pregnant with #3 and we had a miscarriage in there too. I know how frustrating it can be. If you can (are able to) send me your charts and I'll take a look at it. If you dont chart online, you can for free at
fertilityfriend.com
Plug in your info (if you havent already) and e-mail it to me. I'll see if maybe I can see something you dont. One big misconception women have is if they have a 28 day cycle for example, that must mean they ovulate on day 14 because its right in the middle. I have a 31 day cycle, but don't ovulate until day 21. so if I were trying to get pregnant on day 15 or 16, it won't work.

Here is my e-mail if you want to chat.

I've also heard that pro-biotics help with fertility (both for men and women), and they're good for you anyway, so it can't hurt. I'd do some research into ones that have a high content of live pro-biotics. (Not all yogurts have a hell of a lot of live active culture, or whatever it's called.) Also, I just saw some research that eating a diet of lean means, but also *full* fat dairy is key. Yum. Good luck!

Avoid soy! You can Google it, but here is a quick overview: http://www.mercola.com/2005/jul/9/soy_fertility.htm

Note that soy is in so many processed foods, and in some canned foods you might not expect, so read labels.

When I was looking at this a few years ago, I was intrigued by Maca. I really know very little about it though.
