Trying to Put Weight on My Son - Isopure or Muscle Milk?

My son is not underweight, but very lean and has been in the 25% for height and weight since birth.

He is about to be 10 now, and will be playing tackle football in the Fall. I am very concerned about this because he has always been one of the smallest kids in his class, and I have seen a few of the kids who play on opposing teams, and they look like mini- NFL players. That said, we are going to try and put some weight on him over the Summer. He eats a lot, and a variety of foods, but has a very high metabolism, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Someone suggested adding an Isopure Protein Shake to his diet. I visited the Vitamin Shoppe this afternoon, and the manager suggested Muscle Milk instead, because it contains more calories. Does anyone have experience with either of these products?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Just wanted to add that my son does NOT like Pediasure. I have spoken with my pediatrician, and he suggested a protein shake of some kind, but could not give me a specific kind to try, due to his lack of expertise on the subject.

I do not need a lecture on parenting or nutrition. And of course, I will investigate any product suggested. But I am here for just that - suggestions.

Thanks.

I'm the mom of four boys who started out playing peewee football (yes, tackle). All of whom were slight when they started about 8 years old. I never gave them supplements (please, I'm not judging) because I knew they had a lot of growing to do. I did, however, load their meals with carbs and protiens, and peanut butter& jelly sandwiches (don't laugh) is on of the best choices. Two of them now play college football, two on championship H.S. teams (250 lbs. and up!) Just something to ease your mind. Don't worry he's got a lot of growing to do. Been there.

My son is also little and plays football. He's tougher than many of the bigger players, but I do get concerned when they weigh twice as much and are 6" taller. I can't give you any advice on the protein shakes, but I do let my son get those 600+ calorie fruit smoothies at places like Jamba Juice and then we add protein powder and calcium. When football starts you're going to need to pile the food into him. He will practice 10 hours a week, during conditioning. While it is not recommended that kids lift weights at this age, you can have him build muscle with pull ups, push ups, sit ups and yoga type moves, where the only thing he is lifting is his own weight. This might help beef him up a bit before football.
Good luck and have fun being a stadium mom.

I read this post to my husband who is a body builder and in high school he was 119lbs and on the wrestling team, after graduating he started putting muscle and bulk on now he is at 190 5'8 and looks good. this is what he suggests stay away from the isopure and muscle milk its too expensive the product he suggests is OPTIMUM NUTRITION whey protein during the day and at night do casien protein same company. the reson is the whey will digest fast and the casien is a slower digestion to last through the night. He needs to eat clean no junk fast food. My husband said if you want more info to send me a privite message and he will gladly get you going on the right track.

I would recommend that you look into Shaklee. They are the number one natural supplement company and the products are used by astronauts and many olympians. They have several options--Physique, Cinch, or Meal Shakes. Just make sure they are used as supplements and not meal replace ments. You can find them at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife.
Some of those products at the so called health stores may put on the weight, but they are not well formulated. For example they only have 8 of the 9 essential amino acids.

absolutely call your pediatrician.

I have a 10 year old daughter who needs to gain weight. Her doc recommended pediasure, there is a specific one for weight gain (look carefully at the label, it will say "weight gain" plus). It isn't cheap but it is for children.

I'm not lecturing, I'm sure you are a fine mother. Just in case other's are reading this, I was just making a point about vitamins and supplments.

I'd be cautious to ask a store clerk what to use on a child. Your son is young and many of those supplements are for adults and for body builders. Your son is a growing boy and you don't want him ingesting chemicals that could alter or affect his growth. Also, none of those supplements, etc. in those stores are FDA approved.

I know pediasure is expensive, your pediatrician can give you coupons.
If you can't afford it, I've heard of people using carnation breakfast milk mixes. Can't recall the exact title but you hopefully know what I mean.
Those would be cheap, easy high calorie drinks.

My husband is a nutritionist. He recommends Isopure to many of his clients - adolesent and adult. It is an excellent source of lean protein (40 grams per serving), without much of the added sugar, and very few chemicals and preservatives you will find in a lot of the protein shakes. It is absolutely safe for kids. There are NO chemicals that would affect his growth, or anything like that.

Look into it for yourself, and do not listen people who are so quick to judge and group any and all supplements into the same category, without having any knowledge of the particular products themselves. You are doing the right thing by inquiring and investigating yourself.

I also noticed that you did not say anything at all about cost or expense. So, I assume that isn't the driving force in you trying to find an alternative to Pediasure...Isopure and Muscle Milk are quite a bit more expensive than Pediasure, so I am sure you are just trying to find the best product for your son :)
