My son stopped taking to the breast a couple of weeks ago. I was just able to get a breast-pump and I am able to produce *beads* of milk with the pump. It's not very stimulating. But yet, when I put my baby to my breast, he screams, or if he's happy and not hungry, he thinks its a game and will put his mouth on it and pull back and smile. He will not suck anymore though. I went back to work and he was getting bottles, and then got a really bad cold, so he stopped breastfeeding all together. Any advice on how to re-establish breastfeeding?? Produce more milk? He used to be a really good breast-feeder... it breaks my heart that he won't anymore.

Hi, K.!
Call to Lactation Consultant

To produce more milk i can advice you Royal Jelly - is the best, has 28 natural vitamins and minerals. 1 pill 3 times a day. There is a link:

Also you can drink Mother's milk tea.

Or go to Organic store, they have tea or some other herbs for lactation.
Best wishes,

He is used to get alot of milk fast from the bottle and since your supply has decreased he will not get the milk he is used to with the bottle. My suggestion would be to keep using the pump to get your suppply back up. Use the teas and drink LOTS of water. You will have to pump often. When you feel full and he is hungry he will latch, but you are going to have to be dedicated to getting the milk flowing again. There is supposed to be a bottle that is for breastfeeding to avoid nipple confusion, the milk does not come out as fast as typical bottles and the sucking motion they have to use is similar. There are a few types out, so search the internet. Sorry, I can't think of the name!
Breastmilk is best for your son, so keep up the work!
Best of luck to you

How old is your son? Around 10-12 months babies sometimes go through "nursing strikes" when they don't want to nurse much.
Keep pumping (at least 15 minutes on each breast 4-5 times per day) and keep trying to get him to nurse! And of course drink lots of water.
check out www.askdrsears.com or www.breastfeeding.com for more nursing strike info.
Good luck!
Hi K.,
I have also some problems with the breastfeeding because of the lack of milk. My baby used to scream anytime that I tried to breastfeed. The only solution was to use a syringe with formula at the time of breastfeeding. So when he is latched on to your breast you put the syringe in one side of your baby mouth and give him some formula to estimulate him.
Best wishes,

how old is your son? My daughter is almost 9 months and she does that but when she was good and hungry she would suck and all but if she wasn't she would pull and play maybe he has nipple confusion since you are giving him bottles and all
There is a thing called a SNS, supplimental nursing system, it has a bottle and a very small tube that you tape to your nipple and when your child is sucking he gets milk AND it is still stimulating your milk supply.
Just because your not getting a lot when your pumpiong dosen't mean you don't have more than that in your breast, a baby is way better at getting milk out than a pump.
PLEASE contact your local LLL and talk w/someone, they will be a great help!
Let me tell you, I have heard of mom's totally stopping nursing at the breast, and just pumping and giving in a bottle and then going back and getting baby back on the breast. IT CAN BE DONE! it just takes time and patience, if your stressed the baby will be too!
Good luck any BM for your DC is a wonderful gift!
PLEASE contact your local La Leche League leader. They will come to you and give you free breastfeeding counseling. Call 1-800-La-Leche to find your closest leader.
Hi, K.. My best advice to you is to rent a breast pump for the hosipital. They are the best and more like a baby nursing then all of those other pumps out there. I rented mine from Wellington Regional for $50 a month and if it doesn't work for you and you return the pump before the month is up they will charge you per day and give you the difference back! That will help keep your breastmilk there but you will have to try and pump every 2-3hours to stimulate the glands to produce milk. I just read this on the internet yesterday. At night you can go 5-6 hours between pumping. You may have to also look at your diet. Do you drink alot of caffinated drinks, ie. coffee, soda, tea, stuff like that? If so you should limit them to only 8 ounces or less a day. Also, which I know is hard to do, try to eliminate the stresses in your life. These all contribute to the lack of breastmilk. These little things may not work but it is worth a try. Now, as far as the getting him to take the breast again goes, maybe you can try stimulating the milk follow and then putting him on the breast. If that doesn't seem to work maybe could try breastfeeding him at night when he wakes up and see how that goes while is still a bit out of it. He may also have just weaned himself off of the breast. It doesn't mean your a bad mother if he would rather take a bottle. You could just pump and give hime the breastmilk in the bottle. That way he is still getting the vitamins and nutrients from the breastmilk.
I would suggest trying to Pump milk 2 times during the day while at work.. this will keep your milk supply up... even if it's just for 10 minutes...
I was able to provide my son pumped milk for the 1st 9 months of his life after I had to go back to work... It's a lot of work.. but well worth it to me.. and even if he won't take it Directly from You.. at least he's still reaping in the benefits... good luck
Hi K.,
The bottle Ana is talking about is called Second Nature, they sell it at BabiesRus. I've never used it but it looked pretty interesting. Anyways, I found that every pump works differently, I bought a First Years brand electric pump that was TERRIBLE and painful, it made a loud noise and I felt like a cow being mechanically stimulated for milk!! Needless to say I could not relax which affected milk production! So I ended up spending more money and invested on a Medela brand pump and I could clearly tell how different pumps could be! The Medela pump felt alot more natural, it was quiet and I could pump one breast while DD nursed on the other(this is one way I increased my BM production)! I also recommend pumping very frequently if he won't nurse, but still continue to offer your breast to him! Most importantly relax, stress can make your BM decrease and will make you DS feel stressed about nursing. It has to feel enjoyable and not like "just another duty" and I'm sure you don't feel this way because you wouldn't be inquiring about continuing to nurse if you did, but its very easy to get fustrated and give up! Keep up the good work! :)
