Tubal Ligation "Tubes Tied"

Hello moms, I am having my 3 rd child soon and it will be a C-section delivery. Since it is the 3rd C-section and we don't want anymore kids, I have been thinking of getting the Tubal ligation. My doctor offered to do it during the C-section, so there would be no additional surgery for me. That seems pretty simple... Has anyone had this done as well and are there any problems afterwards ? Couldn't find much negative on the internet about this procedure, but I would like to know from women who had this done. Good and bad experience. Also I am only 31 and I am aware that they could grow back together and that I could either get pregnant or have an ectopic pregnancy. Any advice is appreciated !!!!

Had mine done in 2007, after my 2nd child. I knew that I couldn't handle anymore. Haven't noticed much difference. There are a few bad days a month, buy my cycles actually seem a bit shorter. Kind of wish they had just done a whole hysterecomy and gotten everything done with!

I didn't have a c-section, so the operation was seperate. Wasn't supposed to lift anything for a week. There was some pain for a few days, but nothing that 2 tylenol didn't help.

Hi K.! When I had my second c-section, my husband and I knew we didn't want more children, so I had my tubes tied at the same time. Actually they tied, clipped, and burned them I think. It just took a few extra minutes, and didn't seem to make a difference in recovery or anything, as far as I could tell. I know a couple of women who've gotten pregnant after tubals, and I had heard that encouraging your OB to use at least 2 methods of closing the tubes (cutting, clipping, tieing, burning, etc.) is supposed to increase the odds that it will work! Anyway, I think if you're really REALLY sure you're done having babies, then it's a great relief to not have to worry about birth control anymore. So far, I'm very happy I had it done-it's been a little over a year. Good luck!

I had my tubes tied after my 3rd child and I was only 23 at the time. The only side-affect, if you will, is that I get really bad PMS now. I feel bad for my husband and kids having to deal with it, but it's better than having more kids to deal with. I know a lot of other people who after having their tubes tied have had heavier flow during their periods, bad cramping during their periods, and the same PMS problems I have had. Good luck and congrats on the new addition to your family.

Hi K.

I too had a tubal ligation during my c-section and I must say that for me it was a no brainer!! You are already open, it just takes a minute to take out the tube section. I had one 7 years ago and I haven't had any problems to speak of. Go for it!! My only problem was when my third got on the bus for kindergarten. For about three days, I really regretted not being able to have any more children but I quickly go over it :-)

My mom had it done after child #4 (a surprise = ).
She said she had no ill effects and that it didn't change her flow or PMS or anything. If anything, the migraines she used to have when I was a child went away. Go figure!
HTH!

Actually, I'm surprised a dr will do procedure then. Sometimes, they'd rather wait to see if you change your mind.

K., I had my tubes tied after 3 C-sections. I was 33 at the time. I never had any problems and I healed just as quickly from the surgery as I had after the first two C-sections. Just a personal note: I had three sons, was trying for a girl the third time :)they are all grown up now and great kids. Good luck to you. M.

Had same procedure done after my son, 2nd C-section, no side effects, no nothing. Same flow as far as periods go and haven't gotten pregnant or experienced complications. Took about 10 more minutes, I'm assuming after the baby was delivered to complete surgery. I think it's a great idea:) Congrats on your little one. By the way, I was 30 when I had this done.

I had this done after my c-section with my second child, I had alot of complications during my pregnancy and decided I would be very happy with 2 children, and could not go thru being pregnant again. I did not have any complications and it was good to know I would not have to go back in the hopital to have this done since they could do it right after my c-section. So if you are sure you are defintely going to have your tubes tied I would go ahead and schedule it along with your c-section. definitely made everything alot easier! Good luck!

a friend of mine had this done 5 years ago and sense then had a blockage or infection because of it. you have to think it's like a tube that leaks once a month. after so many months the stuff that normally comes out is going to collect in the tubes because theres no place for it to go . many woman are fine with that but others get a problem because of it. i myself wouldnt do it but i think the think you need to find out is what are the chances for anything bad to happen because of the procedure. find out what they are and how easily they can be fixed.

I had it done- but had them cut and cauterized so they are not growing back!!!
I had two C sections - and had an epidural the first time, but couldn't the second time - I was on morphine which is poor pain management.
I remember the hours and days after the tubal was much more painful for me but I think it could be due to the whole process of the morphine being much worse. I do remember telling the nurse after that my pain level was a 9 out of 10.

Again, it could be due to the morphine.
Periods were heavier and irregular for a while but two years exactly later, they are more regular but still heavy compared to what I remember from before.

But I don't regret doing it. Since they were in there anyway, it made sense to do it all at once. I was just really surprised that the tubes did hurt as much as they did.

Hi K.,

Congrats on baby number 3. I have two and although they are quite beautiful and wonderful...I'm done. I was 38 when I had my son via C-section. I did have the procedure done at that time. I do have serious PMS and I am a raging maniac with no patience 1-2 weeks before my period, but I think that's just ME. Sucks for my husband and my kids, but it's nothing a little yoga and an occasional Xanax can't fix.:)

I'd have to say that the majority of people I know who've had a tubal have had no issues. Of course, there will always be someone who experienced some type of complication (whether related to it or not), but no one's perfect.

God Bless you and your family! Enjoy those little ones!
