Tubal Ligation - Your Stories Please??

I posted on here a few weeks ago about possibly getting a tubal ligation after my baby is born (due in early March). I have epilepsy, PCOS, MTHFR, and Heterozygous Factor V Leiden Mutation. Because of the MTHFR & Factor V my birth control options are limited to progesterone only meds, IUD, or Tubal (or Essure?). I had lots of responses about having my husband get a vasectomy and about Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. I know we are DONE having kids after this one since there have been more complications than with our first.

What I really want to know are the stories of moms who have had this done. Did everything go great? Do you have any side effects or other problems related to this?

Thanks ahead of time for sharing your stories!

So What Happened?

I've decided to go ahead with it. I have not signed consents as of yet, but I will when the doc says we should. In talking with the OB/GYN, we've decided it's whats best for me given my health issues. No guarantee that I won't need some kind of hormone due to my PCOS, but I'm praying not! I actually usually say I'm 98% sure I'm getting it done, but my real reasons for concern are things like the pain and possible tubal (which could happen anyway or I could end up pregnant with an IUD - I've seen it). I've asked 2 docs about the side effects and both say that usually women have been on BC, got pregnant, back on BC, etc and they are older when they decide on a tubal - that any heavy periods, increased cramping, etc is usually not related to the tubal. My OB said she's been doing it for 10yrs and the only people that regret it are the ones that decide they want more children. It really is the pain that scares me the most. I know we're done though after this little guy makes his arrival, so I'll have the tuabl and there will be no more chance (hopefully) to risk me having another seizure while pregnant or to risk an unborn babies safety due to all my meds and possible seizures. It just wouldn't be fair. THank you all for your responses and if anyone else wants to comment, please feel free! I could use more encouragement!

I had it done when my second was born (we knew we only wanted two kids). I had a c-section and chose to have the tubal ligation at the same time, while she was already "in there". I had a c-section with my first daughter, too, and noticed no difference between the first and second - the tubal made no difference in my recovery and I had no side effects. Hope this helps and best wishes!

I had mine during my 4th C Section in November 2009. So far, no problems here. My periods had gotten a little crazy, but that really can't be blamed on the TL since it has nothing to do with the hormones. Anyway, I had a D & C and Ablation this past December to take care of that. It is VERY nice to not have to worry about pregnancy. Its also nice to not have all of the synthetic hormones in me. I have discovered a new-found sense of freedom to go with the "urges" that come along naturally during ovulation ;)

I had one after my third child. I had a c-section, so it was an easy operation for my OB/GYN to do while I was already on the table. It went fine. No problems. No difference to my healing process either after all was said and done (that was my third c-section, so I was able to compare). While there can be complications, they are rare. For those who are advocating your husband getting a vasectomy, there are just as many potential complications to that operation as a tubal ligation.

Also- for those individuals who think that increasingly heavy/painful periods are caused by tubal ligations, it just ain't so. There is a condition called adenomyosis which is completely another issue that can cause this. Go see your OB/GYN and ask about it. I know about this because I had it and had to have a hysterectomy to get rid of it. My tubal ligation had nothing to do with it. The medical profession is unclear as to why adenomyosis occurs in some women. It is the intrusion of the uterin lining into the uterin muscle wall. It can cause all sorts of problems. I feel 110% better since my hysterectomy.

Hope this helps!

Hi there! My name is A. and I had a tubal litigation done 4 1/2 years ago. (wow time flys) I had no adverse affects. I was glad that I got it done. The surgery itself was not such a big deal-I was real concerned about it -but it wasn't as bad as I thought. The only thing was that I was in pain longer than what I thought I would be. Although I was a single mom having to take care of 3 children and was unable to take time off from work. I would definately reccommend it. Just take as much time as you can to heal your body and rest. God bless, I hope everything goes well for you!

I had it done the day after my baby was born and four years laster I had to have a Hysterectomy due to an infection caused by the tubal ligation. If I had not had that done I would not have had the problems and would not have had to have the surgery.

Another case I know of personally where the tubal went wrong. My sister in law ended up having a tubal pregnancy. She didn't even know she was pregnant and then started having serious bleeding. She went to the ER and they told her she was pregnant. She explained that she had a tubal and couldn't be pregnant. She was, the baby was in her tube and of course they had to take the baby and do a Hysterectomy on her.

Men do not have problems after a vasectomy. I have seven brothers and I know that at least two of them have had it done with no problems at all. Any doctor will tell you if the man is willing to get it done it is far better than a woman having it done.

If I had it to do all over again I would not have gotten the tubal. With all of your medical problems already I say let your hubby worry about the birth control issue. You have enough to deal with without a tubal going wrong. Good Luck!

I had a tubal 4.5yrs ago. I've had no problems. my MIL had a tubal after she had her 3rd (and then had my husband, her 4th), but after that no problems. my SIL had a tubal about 2 or 3 yrs ago and no problems. tubal pregnancies are something that can happen, but it's rare and it's something that can happen anyways. When you go in and agree to the tubal it's a simple procedure now that they don't even have to open you up (unless you have a c-section like i did). my SIL had it done by laser. Yes, things can happen, but it's rare that something serious happens and these things can happen anyways. i knew a woman who had her stomach stapled years ago and then about 3 or 4 yrs after that she had to get most of her intestines cut out because of infection. things happen in life. if this is the best thing for you because of health reasons, i say go for it.

I had a tubal ligation done when son #3 was born last January (via repeat C-Section). I haven't had any issues. My husband had a vasectomy as well. Sooooo...if we get pregnant now, I guess it's a message from God. : )

I had my tubal in January of 07 after the birth of my son in November 06. Until 2 months ago my periods lasted at least two weeks at a time and that is the only possible cause for it. However, right after I had the tubal the only pain I experienced was in my shoulders and neck from the gas rising there staying for about two days. The procedure itself appears to be a complete success and I do highly recommend it for permanence and piece of mind. I was 23 when I had it done and it was done laparoscopically as an out-patient.

I had my tubal done 4 weeks after my 3rd was born. (all 3 vaginal births) It was a lazer proceedure with 2 very small incisions. I was in and out within a few hours. I had about a week of minor discomfort that I was able to manage with extra strength tylenol. I had hot flashes for about a month or 2 (may or may not be attributed). Since then no side effects. I feel great! So glad I did it.

I had mine done last year during my c-section with my second child. It went fine and if you have a c-section I would recommend doing it then since it's done, no more procedures. I have had no issues since-my periods are heavy, but I don't know if that is a direct relation to the TI.

Otherwise, it's a quick laprosopic procedure that should go smoothly.

Although I have no knowledge to share I have to thank you for your post. I had a TL 4.5 years ago and after reading about it realize I too suffer from side effects from this procedure. I had the surgery along with my emergency c-section so it was not "planned" . I had discussed with my doctor wanting to do it because at 38 we did not want any more children. How ever at no time did my (female) Dr. ever discuss any of the risks with me. Now I am angry that she did not. ( My husband would of had a Vasectomy if my delivery was normal.) But this has helped me realize why things are happening and changing. I wish good luck on you decision. Thanks for educating me.

I had a tubal at the same time as having my repeat c-section Sept 2008. Everything went great. I have not noticed any side effects, at least nothing that I attribute to the tubal. I was in a little more pain than I was with my first c-section. My OB said some of the pain was from the tubal, it kinda feels like a burning effect but inside where you can't really point to it. With in a couple weeks of healing I was jsut fine and have not had any issues since.

For me it was a fairly easy decision. I had always waited and said I would consider only if I was already in for c-section. My pregnancies are always complicated with bed rest and this second one was even worse than the first, starting labor at 24 weeks, ugh. I did have a small amount of regret that I will no longer have any more babies and it is a mourning process. But I also feel very strongly that I don't want to go through all the complications again, my second ds had some pretty icky medical issues that we are just getting past and I would not want to put another child through that possibility. Not to mention we both feel like our family is just the right size at 4.

Good luck!
