Tummy Time - Brook Park, OH

My baby was born premature, 12 weeks early. She was actually born on 11/26, but was due 2/19. Her gestational age is about 2-3 weeks old. I have been told by some to start tummy time right away. I will try every other day. However, whenever I do try, my baby just falls right asleep. I know being on her belly was/is her comfort-she loved it in the NICU and whenever I lay her belly down on my chest, she's fast asleep. Any suggestions? I've trying putting her flat on her belly on a blanket, belly on the boppy, rattling toys, and rubbing her back. She starts off fussing and then falls asleep. Anyone experience this or have things to suggest? Help Me Grow is coming out this week to assess her...

What can I do next?

Hello J.! My girlfriend had twins at 30 wks and all they did was eat and sleep for the first 3-4 monthes of their lives. They were in the NICU for six weeks and spent most of their time on their tummies. I'm not sure what you expect, or what your evaluators expect, but I wouldn't worry too much about her falling asleep when you lay her down. I work some in the NICU at my job as a respiratory therapist and all the babies mature and develop at different rates. My own full term baby would fall asleep wherever I put him for the first two monthes of his life. Try not to worry, your little one will start to hold up her head and play soon enough! Good luck!

tummy time is very important. As I learned w/my first child. It sounds like you are doing everything right. Just keep it up. If she finds a comfort on her tummy thats ok she'll eventually realize tummy time is for play also. My second child was born 1-11-2008 and is the same way. she was the opposite of your daughter she went 40 plus weeks and we had some complications at delivery. She also falls asleep on her tummy when i try to give her tummy time. She also spent time in the nicu.
Good luck! Keep trying!

It is good that she is at least on her tummy for a short time span...
Have you tried putting a toy in front of her with lights and music that she can watch and track with her eyes plus get her muscles active. There are tummy time toys on the market or you can just set up a few toys for her to watch. My babies loved to watch anything that had lights and sound!
Good Luck!

HI J.,

At what point in the day are you putting her on her tummy?
Before feeding? After feeding?

Newborns are so sleepy, I remember both of my kids would also fall asleep on their tummy. At first it was weird to me cos they couldn't push themselves up at all, maybe lift the head for a few seconds.

Just remember if you're doing it every "awake time" and she pushes half way for 3 days, the 4th she may manage one big push and then it continues to increase....

It doesn't sound like she's out of the norm since at 2 to 3 weeks I remember my babies also fell asleep some.
The only thing would be making sure that you do it when she's in that one period of being the most awake.

Also, what kind of gym do you have?
I was recommended the little birdy, it takes batteries and both of my kids loved it, the birdy sings and moves back and forth so as soon as they could focus better - 2 to 3 months they were all over the birdy :)

COngratulations on your little miracle!!! What a blessing...I have 6 children and tummy time has varied for all...I can say you little one might be falling asleep because she is overstimulated maybe it is still just too much for her to handle...Good luck with her! Just keep trying nad soon she will be rolling over and sitting up and then trying to walk!!! Good luck
