Well...we started giving more solids to our 14 month old and in the beginning it seemed that even though he went poopy once a day and it was a little solid but no worries.....now he is going poopy 3 times a day most right after meals and it is pretty runny........not sure if something he is eating is causing this so I thought I'll ask the more experienced moms......
He is eating a lot of blueberrie and blackberries at all his meals since these are his favorite and a good way to get him situated in the high chair....he has 2 cups of yogurt a day (organic - one plain, one flavored baby yogurt), 2 bottles of soy milk in the day and then we are finishing the last batch of formula so he as a bottle of that at nigth - other solids at meal time vary from steamed veggies, nuggets, pizza, rice porridge, ravioli etc....he also will sometimes snack on cheese puffs and gold fish.
He doesn't each much at each meal but we do try and give him a variety to ensure he doesn't become a picky eater which he already is :-)
do you see anything in the list above that could be causing the little tummy upset??
Thank you!!!!!!!!

So What Happened?

We do Soy milk as he is lactose intolerant - he gets tummy upset every time to drinks whole milk....are there more nutritious options other than soy and whole milk? I did ask his paediatrician and she said she will start him on some vitamin supplements once we completely stop the formula.........he has always been okay with yogurt............sounds like the berries might be the culprit

Sounds about like what my LO is eating. He poops about 3-4 times a day too. They are not solid, but are not runny either. His looks like mush or a thin mush per say. Way too TMI!

In my experience, 25 years between home daycare, nanny and a child center, blueberries can cause some of that issue!

Also, has he always done soy? Soy formula so thats why you do soy milk? If so, maybe the yogurt is messing him up? Altho when my own (now a teen) daughter was little and did soy as she barfed up everything (massive spitting up kid..probly reflux but they didn't diagnose and treat that like they do now I think)...I was told that the enzymes in yogurt make it process differently than regular dairy so even many lactose sensitive people like she was considered could do yogurt usually. And for her, that did hold true as long as we limited it. Too much was just TOO much of any dairy item once she was off formula and eating cheese and yogurt and the like.

Maybe its too much for him? I guess for me I would cut back on the berries and the yogurt for a week and see if they make a difference.

Good luck!

Berries are a natural "poop producer" - might just be that!

My daughter was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age 5, but she had mushy/runny "blowouts" from when she started solids. They got worse over time. Then she was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and food allergies. I thought the runny BMs might be part of her illnesses, but was told no. Then someone suggested dietary changes. We eliminated soy, wheat/gluten, dairy and egg, and filled her with rice-based foods, lots of fruits and vegetables and meat. She didn't improve. Fast forward a few years and she got worse, got the ulcerative colitis diagnosis and we changed her diet completely. She no longer gets any soy, rice, potato, gluten/wheat, sugar or a number of other foods. Her BMs have completely changed.

In your son's case, I'd start by removing one item at a time (e.g. berries) and wait a few days. If the loose stools continue, remove another item (e.g. yogurt) and keep removing/waiting/removing/waiting until his BMs are normal again. If he's lactose intolerant, then yogurt is not a good idea unless you are fermenting it yourself. My daughter was able to eat hard cheeses and homemade yogurt on her special diet, but we were recently told by a naturopath we took her to that she's intolerant of the proteins in the milk and so we've stopped all dairy. I've been told greens like collard greens, turnip greens, chard, and spinach are all better sources of calcium than dairy, so that's what she gets now.

Teething, as someone already mentioned, can also be a cause of the runny BMs. If he's not teething, then keep a daily journal - write down what he ate and start eliminating one item at a time (waiting a few days in between each food elimination) until you figure out what's causing the problem.

Good luck!

if you have upped his water intake as well that can also make his poops more loose. I know that my almost 3 year old will have runny stools if he eats ravioli or anything else with a tomato based sauce. if you are really concerned you could always talk to his pediatrician. could also be the yogurt.
also, as a side note, you may want to switch off of soy! the soy milk/formula does not do enough to strengthen their bones or help with bone growth and development. our sons' surgeon, he is a craniofacial surgeon who has repaired their cleft lips and palates, told us to avoid soy unless there is no other option available. just my two cents/

He wouldn't be teething by chance? That makes my 17 mo old's poo really runny- I guess from the extra drool she is swallowing? I feed my baby the same things you mentioned with no problems.

Just wondering about the lactose and if it could be the other dairy products in his diet, such as the yogurt, ravioli (cheese), pizza. Those all have dairy in it so maybe that is causing it?
