I want to hire some college students to tutor me part-time. I'm not even sure what all I'll want help with. So I'd just like to get someone that is pretty smart and has a pretty flexible schedule. What's the cheapest dollar per hour I can offer without being rude? I do live about 10 minutes from a community college. In the 90's I was getting students that were happy to be paid 20 bucks cash for 2 hours. Is that still acceptable? I know my income has not gone up in these years! But I don't want to be just mean.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well my daughter is a student at San Diego State and she told me she knows a lot of students that would be fine with 10 dollars per hour. If that's true in San Diego, I'm sure it should be okay in the Midwest. I'll probably offer 12 though. :)

I am not yet in school. I have to pay off my van and put away a little savings before I can officially start. So I am working on satisfying credits through CLEP exams first. I have to study it on my own.

I am a community college student and worked at the college. The college I attend has its own tutoring program and they pay the student tutors $10-12/hr. AND they have to go through a testing process to determine the level of capability in their subjects. The student tutors are the best of the best in that class, and most have 4.0's.
I live in calif. and can't believe some tutors get pd $55/hr....alot of people w/advanced degrees don't get pd that much!! If you live near a community college you can contact them and they will refer student tutors to you that are looking for extra work. Hope this helps!

I am currently paying $55 an hour to a local tutoring company. Prior to that I was paying $20 an hour to a college freshman. both are to tutor my teen in algebra. the freshman returned to college in hawaii and i didnt feel like interviewing a bizzillion people so i went with a local company that matched us with a wonderful tutor. I would offer at least 20 an hour.

college students would LOVE $10 per hour.
Real teachers who are tutoring want $50 per hour, but I know of several who work for $25 cash.

Tutoring, is usually $50/hour at the minimum for a designated Tutor.
But sure, maybe a college student will be less.
Put up a flier at your local campus.
College students like to make extra money.

But you need to know, what you want to be Tutored in.

Check with the college, I know many of them offer FREE peer tutoring for students, are you in school now? My college had a tutoring program, it was federally funded, and many of the tutors used it for work study hours. Of course this only applies if you are attending the school.

I would check around your area and see what the going rate is. I am a private tutor and won't work for less than $35 an hour, and I'm honestly not all that qualified. I'm good at the specific subject areas I cover, but I'm not a teacher or anything. The teachers around here who tutor on the side charge $40 - $50 per hour. But the college scene might be totally different - check the ads at the college you're considering hiring from and that should give you a pretty good idea.

In my area a tutor for academics is $50/hour to start. CASH

A lot of teachers tutor on the side or tutor when they are on maternity leave, etc. I would not offer less than $20/hour. Ask around to get the going rate for your area. Contact the community college and see if you can post a tutor needed ad on the bulletin board. It needs to be worth the student and/or teacher's time.

We pay $25 for 1/2 hour weekly private violin lessons

We pay $40 per 1/2 hour weekly for private cheer training on top of $100 per month for the cheer squad training.

My friend tutors and charges $25 an hour which is 1/2 of what others charge so my friend is always full. On the other hand, I think college students would appreciate $10 an hour or $12. It never hurts to ask. Good luck!!

When I was in college a lot of my classes had smarter students and we would start study groups. I didn't actually pay for tutoring even in math classes. They have learning labs for math classes, science classes, and it seems like I had the opportunity to sign up for learning labs in something else but I can't remember.

I would wait and find specific tutors for specific classes. I know I could tutor someone in a sociology or psychology class but not ever in math. You may get someone really needing the money and not very good in what you are needing. The teachers can also give you some ideas. They may have a grad student that does tutoring in their classes that is very very good.

Give yourself a chance to succeed before you expect yourself to need extra help...you'll be just fine.

My friend's daughter is a Junior at Long Beach State and is an accounting major and fantastic at math. She was working at a restaurant and tutoring high level math and recently quit the restaurant because the tutoring is taking off...she is paid $45/hour.

I paid $30/half hour for softball pitching lessons six years ago.
