We don't have cable or even regular channels but my son (6) watches Wild Kratts on the pbs website. He loves it & has learned an insane amount of things about animals.

We are also a family that loves Wild Kratts. Just the other day my 5 year old spouts off, "Mom, did you know that the Rhino and the Oxpecker have a symbiotic relationship?" ummm...yes? He also likes Bubble Guppies and Team Umizoomie.

Really, it's much better if a 5 year old doesn't watch TV.

We do some videos that are recorded TV episodes, borrowed from the library. It's a lot more controllable. My kids have enjoyed PBS kids and Curious George. We also watch animal videos on You-Tube (under adult supervision).

Beware of shows like Arthur. Research has shown that these shows are actually the most socially destructive of all of them, despite good intentions. They spend a lot of time setting up the conflict, then 5 minutes resolving it. The result is that the kids mostly learn creative ways to treat each other badly, and don't actually absorb most of the "pro-social" lesson.

My son loves Dinosaur Train on PBS. It includes two of his favorite things - dinosaurs and trains. He also watches Nick JR and lives Team Umi Zoomi (teaches math) and Diego. Whenever we see pictures of animals be tells me about when he saw that animal on Diego.

Wild Kratts, Wordgirl, Super Why to name a few. My daughter also loves Phineas and Ferb, but I wouldn't necessarily call that educational. LOL! It's a really cute show though and one even I get a chuckle out of!
