Tween Bath/Shower Soap & Shampoo

My 12 yr old almost 13 likes dial, the have one that i a body wash/shampoo and it smells really good. he has very servere dry skin but it doesnt make it worse. after he' out of the shower he's use vaseline lotion for men and i also bought him oxy clean for he's face. all three produces cost me about $15.00 once a month.

Hi,
You are going to think I'm nuts but get "Main & Tail". It was originally made for horses but now it is sold in most drug stores for human use because it is such a great shampoo and soap. WalMart, Target, Longs even the grocery stores carry it now. I started using it very long ago on my horses, then it became very popular and now you can get it anywhere. My husband and son use it daily.

Our son who is 14 likes the guy stuff by gillette or by
suave. Either one works fine for him. For lotion we use cetaphil.

Aveeno body wash was great for my kids......they may have children's body wash that may be shampoo too..but not sure.

Yes, he is definately old enough to use a separate shampoo, separate conditioner and separate shower gel, just like a grown-up, in my opinion. For natural products, try Whole Foods or the Co-op. They have tons of options. Avalon, Alba, Kiss My Face and Jason are just a few good brands that aren't super-expensive. Take him with you and have him help choose the products. Ask for help in the bath and body department. In the Whole Body department at Whole Foods, the team members are very helpful.

Just a note, while my husband loves the Dove body wash, I prefer Aveeno (my kids use the aveeno baby shampoo and body wash). The dove cool moisture actually gave me an allergic reaction that sensitized me to all sorts of products (using public restrooms was a nightmare for months - especially with 2 little ones and all the samitizing...). I just ran out of aveeno and tried the regular dove body wash, but even that made me itch, although not a full reaction like the cool moisture one. Thought I'd share that, since some people recommended dove. I should note that my husband has a dry, peeling skin condition on his hands, and the dove was recommended by his dermatologist, so you may want to try several products and then decide.

why not give him a small weekly allowance and let him start buying his own personal hygiene products?

Aveeno products have always been a good natural product to use. I have used Aveeno Baby products on my son since he was a baby. I even use the Aveeno Baby lotion on myself when my skin gets too dry and it really moisturizes my skin. My son has excema and with the Aveeno products he hardly has any breakouts. Good luck

At his age he can use the same thing you and your husband use. If he has dry skin get him Dove or give him lotion to apply. Just know he will may soon start using it for other purposes.

Check out Lush.com. They make some of the most natural bath and body stuff on the planet. It smells great, and there are some combos. (My husband uses Sonic Death Monkey as a body wash and shampoo. It smells like chocolate and coffee. Yum).

Trader Joe's carries Tom's of Maine. My 12 year old son uses Tom's Deodorant, but any of the hair/body soaps we use. Sometimes L'Oreal for Kids, Pantene, Suave, etc. Oil of Olay has a sensitive skin wash, but if you want more natural try Tom's of Maine.

Maybe you should try Dove body wash. I'm not sure how well it will do for a shampoo, but is a good moisturizing body wash. It's not tear free though so maybe your son can try wearing goggles in the shower and hold his head back towards the water. Also try having him mositurize his entire body with with Keri (a little expensive) or simply Vaseline. Good luck!

You may want to ask him what he wants to use - if he cares. Teenagers want to be cool down to the soap they use.
Of course you can take this opportunity to teach him (if he is still willing to learn) about different products that can be good and bad for us. it is totally cool to go green, and my girlfriend loves the say yes to carrots brand and I love Alba - but alba is kind of girlie smelling (both at target).
Also get him a skin care routine, boys break out and if they knew all they had to do was use a simple face wash and maybe some salsylic(sp?) acid to combat those zits they'd be ok.

I have a 14 year old son so I have been down this road. For dry skin, Dove is really best, but it may be hard to keep him from smelling like a girl. Let him decide. Anything by Aveeno is very good for the skin, so maybe a body wash from them. He is definitely old enough for regular shampoo. If you are worried about his eyes, drag in Dad for some father/son bonding time. He will be thrilled to use whatever shampoo his Dad uses. Have your husband watch his shampoo technique once to give him advice on how to keep it out of his eyes. He will want to do as his dad does. Next step - shaving!

I recommend any soaps/shampoos that DON'T have Sodium laurel sulfate... <<< that is the stuff that makes the bubbles , in shampoos/soaps and is also the stuff that DRYS one's skin out.. In addition, you may want to look into a shower head that takes much of the chlorine out of the water (another vicious drying agent) we've done both... in that we have a new shower head and I only use california baby shampoo/body wash on my son.. no chemicals... no junk.. not to mention, I notice a big difference on my own skin since using the chlorine free shower head, my skin isn't near as dry.. I would also recommend that if your son's skin is really sensitive, then try and have him limit the amount of really hot water in his shower, the hot water coupled with the chlorine can really dry skin out. I do all of the above for my son who has sensitive skin and it has worked wonders.

He is absolutely old enough for adult products - in fact with the body odor and pimple issues that arise in adolescence childrens products are no longer appropriate. He can use what you use if you want to keep costs down and not buy separate products. Otherwise you can buy him what he wants. I was recommended by a dr to use Pure and Natural Soap for dry or sensative skin. It's unscented and cheap. However my husband insists on a deoderant soap (such a Irish Spring- he uses the Irish Spring Aloe) and I have to admit I think it works better for men. He is also old enough for an antipersperant/deoderant. The last thing a tween/teen wants is the embarrassment of body odor (just like the rest of us). Often a two in one shampoo (i.e. shampoo and conditioner together) is easy and uncomplicated for boys/men. Something as simple as Suave for Men will do the trick and is inexpensive.If he develops dandruff as some teens do, please get him some dandruff shampoo such as Head and Shoulders as well.

Dr. Bronner's soap is great--all natural, very mild, doesn't dry the skin. Available at any health food store, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, some grocery stores. For a sort-haired boy, it may well be fine as shampoo. My little girl's curls need shampoo, but I was just using Dr. Bronner's on her till a few weeks ago.

It's not drying at all, and it smells so fresh and clean, I even use it sometimes. Your son is definitely old enough for regular shampoo. My friend's son refused to bathe or shower.
