Our daughter does her usual required school reading for the assigned book. I have noticed that when we are waiting in line at the grocery store, she loves to grab a little magazine and read about the current pop stars and take the silly surveys, etc. I love seeing her doing this extra reading and would love to have a subscription coming to the house once a month or so. For some crazy reason, this magazine only sells online subscriptions that you would have to print and it just doesn't seem the same to me. She's in middle school and I would love to have suggestions of tween age appropriate magazines just for some casual, fun reading time.
I haven't been a magazine reader in such a long time that I didn't even think about going to the book store and checking out that section with her to get some ideas. Wonderful suggestions as always from other moms! Thanks so much for your time in answering!
Go to a bookstore.
Go to the magazine rack.
Pick some out.
Then tear out the subscription inserts from it.
Or, ask the Bookstore, which Teen magazines... are popular AND are actually mail subscriptions.
That is what I did once.
How about Teen People? I think that's a print magazine. Or maybe one of the teen celebrity magazines--i think there's Teen Beat, or Tiger Beat or something still?

Check that site. Maybe they have a print version. Or, you could get her a smart phone, and she could read it all online.
My daughter loves J-14 for the celebrity type articles (started reading it at age 13). I must admit I didn't read much of it, what I saw was ok.
I highly recommend National Geographic Kids.
For girly stuff, Discovery Girls.
Check out the magazine suggestion at a book store or dept. store to get an idea of what she might like.
Definitely check out Discovery Girls. They just started releasing a Middle School Edition to subscribers and it's great! They don't focus on celebrities, so your daughter will get articles that actually help her and that she can learn from. They also have fun features like Embarrassing Moments from their other readers, and they do cover celebrities from time to time, but they do it right! www.DiscoveryGirls.com

Some of the magazines can be a bit mature, but you will find quite a few that fill her interest. I loved giving subscriptions to nieces and nephews even as young kids.. They love getting mail.

Discovery Girls magazine
If you want to avoid the pop stars and advertisements, try American Girl Magazine! It has articles on everything from doing your hair to doing crafts to girls who help others in need. If she's a middle schooler she may find it too young but it's generally aimed at girls from about 9-14.
Go to the library and see what kids/teens magazines they carry. Most have no ads or few ads. There are literature magazines for kids and history magazines too, all aimed at them. Ask a children's librarian (they know teen stuff too) what she would recommend!
My tween daughter likes animals and sports so she enjoys Sports illustrated for kids and National Geographic.
My son likes the Discovery kids magazines.
We've also picked up magazines at the library.
