Two Year Old Frequent Vomiting with No Fever

My daughter did that after drinking milk and come to find out she had allergies. I would ask his Dr. and see if he may need to go on allergy med.

I would guess either acid reflux or just a strong gag reflex. I have a wonderful Pediatrician in M'boro Dr Eastham at Tennessee Pediatrics. ###-###-#### He would be able to help!

My daughter would vomit a lot especially first thing in the morning. We found out is was sinus drainage that would settle on her stomach over night and make her sick, the doctor suggested we give her Alavert (over the counter allergy medicine) at night before she went to bed and it seemed to help a lot.

He may have some acid reflux. May need to be on meds. J.

If you cannot link the vomiting to particular foods, I wonder if the texture of the food is enough to cause a gag reflex. Some children are more sensitive to food textures than others and will gag or vomit as a result. Does he complain of tummy aches? Does he have a lot of congestion or runny nose?

My son is 22 mos and sometimes has the same symptoms. He also has major ear problems involving recurring ear infections and fluid buildup. He will sometimes vomit, and have no fever. The pediatrician says it has something to do with his ear and equilibrium. We just had tubes put in, so I hope this is resolved now. Anyway, I would take him to see the pediatrician regardless and get him all checked out.

Have you talked to your pediatrician about this? I would start there and see what they say. You might need to do some testing to find out if it is an allergic reaction to something or possibly go to a specialist to find out if there is a GI issue.

Hi! I can imagine that this is frustrating... The advice that I can offer is that my Godsister could vomit whenever she wanted to as a child. Whenever she was angry or didn't get her way, she would just throw up. Come to find out she has exercise-induced asthma. The doctor told my mom that some children with asthma can do that. I don't know if you already had him checked for asthma along with the alleriges, but it might be worth it...

Hi, A.. My 2yo had the exact same problem, and his pediatrician said that his stomach lining was irritated from an illness he'd had earlier so he was having GERD-like symptoms. She put him on Prevacid for a month to heal it, and it cleared up beautifully. I'd advise checking in with your pediatrician. Good luck!

Definitely sounds like reflux (which we're VERY familiar with in our family). I'd recommend seeing a pediatric gastroenterologist who can probably diagnose and treat reflux, GERD, etc. I've a seven year old on prevacid....he's had reflux since the day he was born.

ABSOLUTELY avoid caffeine (including chocolate), spicy foods, too much dairy (milk is a big culprit in our family), and no soda!! If you're already doing all that, I'd just try to find a well-respected dr.

My daughter had episodes of vomiting that the Dr.s claimed was an ear infection. After 5 years of it, episodes of crying and no sleep, we had her evaluated by a pediatric gastroenterologist in Matthews Dr. Sandberg. (Baptist wouldn't touch her) He found a huge stomach ulcer and esophagitis (swelling/inflammation of the opening to the esophagus)caused by recurrent vomiting which is very painful. Don't let it get that far. Have your child evaluated. Since being on Nexium initially and now Prilosec, no more vomiting and a much happier child! Best of luck!

I have to tell you that you are lucky that it is only about 1 time per week. I will tell you the same thing the doctors have told me for 6 years now. As long as he is not acting sick and is gaining weight there is nothing wrong. My son starting vomitting at 3 days old. It didn't matter what we were feeding him (we tried all the formulas and breast milk) it seemed like he shot out more than he took in, but he was growing. They kept saying he would grow out of it. There will be signs. My son will say he has heart burn and then vomit. It is not related to any food or activity it seems. There are new studies that are showing that heartburn and vomitting can be seen in children with asthma, but my son is to young to get into those studies. We keep children's tums around all the time and his vomitting has gotten less in the last year or so. Before then it was a daily thing. I even had to inform his school that he was prone to vomitting so I wouldn't have to pick him up every day. Good luck and check out the possibility of it being linked to asthma.

Oh my goodness!!!! I have the same problem. My son will be two on July 26. I too thought it was acid reflux. My son often coughs before as well and it is usually once/week. I agree that you should start with the pediatrician. You may or may not need to see a specialist. Probably best to avoid eliminating a lot of foods until you have more info from your doctor... balanced diets are important, too!

I, myself have acid reflux, and have had it for about 17 years. yes it does cause vomiting. My personal experiance is that you can cut out certain acidy food, but if you have a "flare" up it really doesnt matter what you eat. When i have flare ups even if i dont feel like i am going to vomit, if i even bend over to pick something out of the floor i will vomit. But usually there is terrible heartburn associated with acid reflux. But normally it is more of a heavy spit up rather than forceful vomiting.

I would start with the pediatrician. Ask for a referral to have him checked by a GI specialist. My niece used to have the same problem. Found out her tonsils were blocking her sinuses and her wind pipe. She was struggling to breathe... that is why she was throwing up. She was older though.. so I'm not sure how well that translates.

I would definitely take him to be seen. It sounds like it could be an allergy issue. You say there are no other symptoms? Does he sit up correctly, nose runny, etc? I would take him to be seen in case there are other things going on.

Sounds like sinus drainage to me. My son did that for a while at about the same age. It usually happened around supper time too. YUCK! But this makes sense when you take into consideration that when you smell food, your sinuses start draining; most commonly refered to as "mouth watering". When the drainage is going backwards and down the throat it can cause vomitting if the stomach already has lots of mucus in it.
My son got relief when he started taking an antihistimene like Benedryl and avoided mucus inducing foods. Major causes of excess drainage are whole milk and lemonade. Once we went to 2% or skim milk and took all lemon flavored drinks, foods and candies out of his diet he improved greatly. My whole family was anxious to have this pass, both for his sake and ours! Like I said, it usually happened at suppertime... he's the youngest of 4 children, the oldest being only 5 yrs older than him. You can imagine the uproars that came with each episode. The poor fella was so miserable! He eventually outgrew it, (he'll be 15 in October) but he still has some allergies and Benedryl is a staple at our house now.
You might mention the condition to your doctor as a precaution, but it sounds like what my son went through.

excess sinus drainage can lead to recurring ear infections. You might want to have his ears checked as this goes on. We never got to the point of having tubes put in, but he was only "one more infection away" when it the vomitting and excess drainage ended.

My oldest daughter would throw up frequently but she would cough and then throw up. Ended up she had asthma. Something to look into. I restricted dairy and sought out a chiropractor who speacialized in children with childhoold chronic illnesses (i.e. ear infections, asthma, etc.) and she no longer takes any medicine and not asthma symptoms.

I scanned all the previous responses. "GERD" is "acid reflux". All the suggestions are good, but I didn't notice anyone mentioning GERD positioning. As your youngest, he may be trying to exceed his physical comfort levels after he eats to keep up with his older brother and/or his friends.
After he eats, avoid exercise or bending. Try to keep his head elevated and, if possible, position his body on his right side (food drains from the stomach to the lower right). Even sitting upright in a chair can potentially make his already small stomach a bit smaller applying pressure to the inner contents and forcing food upwards.
So, for example, after he eats, hold him in an easy chair with his right side stretched to you and his head to your chest while you both watch a movie and he falls asleep. Or, he can watch a movie lying on his right side against the left arm of the couch with a pillow so his torso is stretched with his head elevated.
Avoid tight waistbands.
I would also try small, frequent meals (grazing) instead of main meals and would avoid encouraging him to eat more than he wants. If he is getting peer pressure to keep up with the quantities from the big brother, maybe for awhile they should eat separately.
Frankly, I would only ask for GERD medications if he continues vomiting after trying these techniques.
Keep a diary of his activities and types and quantities of foods that he ingests before the vomiting. Also, describe the vomiting; dribble, regular, or projectile, freshly eaten or partially-digested food, clear or green liquid, and an
approximate quantity.
I think the pediatrician needs to know about the vomiting immediately if he appears uncomfortable, if the vomit is usually only liquid, and/or if it projects.
Frankly, I would only ask for GERD medications if he continues vomiting after trying these techniques or if the doctors insist.

I HAVE FOUR BOYS AND THREE OF THEM HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. FIRST I HAD TWINS AND ONE OF THEM WAS DIAGNOSED WITH COLIC, BUT THE THING WAS HIS STOMACH DID NOT HURT, SO WE FOUND OUT IT WAS ACID REFLUX TOO LATE. THEN HE GREW OUT OF IT. MY MIDDLE CHILD FROM THE TIME HE WAS A BABY AND HE WAS BREASTFED COULD NOT HOLD DOWN ANYTHING, FINALLY MY PEDIATRICIAN PUT HIM ON LIQUID ZANTAC ONVE DAILY. WORKED LIKE A CHARM, HE ONLY HAD TO TAKE IT FOR HIS FIRST YEAR. SINCE SHE IS TWO SHE MIGHT NEED TO TAKE IT A LITTLE LONGER, CHECK WITH YOUR PEDIATRICIAN. SO WE ENDED UP HAVING TO TREAT HIS ASTHMA FIRST. THEY ENDED UP PUTTING HIM ON A NEBULIZER WITH TWO MEDECINES TWICE A DAY. YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW MUCH FUN THAT WAS. THEN I CAME ACROSS THIS COMPANY THAT HAD PRODUCTS I COULD BUY WITHOUT THE CHEMICALS AND MADE WITH NATURAL THINGS AND IT DID NOT COST ME AN ARM AND A LEG. A., You know your baby better then anyone. Sounds like you have been trying to find the problem on your own for some time. I wouldn't wait another minute...take him to the nearest Free clinic or childrens Hospital.
My grandson was born with a seriou problem and through his life he has had to go back for surgery to open his esophagus and from his stomach to his intestines.Also his stomach was behind his liver (pinched nearly closed)at birth.
The doctors weren't concerned either with his case as an infant...I kept insisting and his parents finally took him. There was a problem, it wasn't what he was eating or any allergies. Take Him Honey and put your mind ay ease!!!!!!!
One word of caution..if at first you get no satisfaction...KEEP TRYING!!!!!
We had our grandson at the best hospital in our area...Lehboner in Memphis.
However, as he has aged..he is 11 now, Lehboner was faced with something so rare... They had No idea what was wrong;they refered him to St. Judes.
St. Judes knew exactly what they were looking at when Austin got there.
I am just saying, "There is an answer for you and your baby.... Don't give up!!!!"

Hello, I have 8 children and out of all of them, 1 (my 2 yr old) was getting her vaccines as directed from her MD and started vomiting. She never developed a fever, but would vomit quite often. he went to the MD's several times went to 3 different specialists, went to severl E.R. visits and no one could find anything wrong. I decided to take her one more time to the E.R. and the MD that she saw did a CT on her abdomen. When it came back they said it was inflamed, but they didn't know from what. They admitted her to childrens hospital and did several tests and still couldn't find anything. The Md specialist she had at hildrens said they suggested doing a surgical procedure to see if they could find anything, after prayer we decided to go ahead with the procedure (she was only 6 mo old at the time) Once they opened her tummy up, they found a tumor in her small intestine that never even showed up on any of the tests. They think that it may have been from the (Roto Virus Vaccine) Not to say that this is wrong with your son, but I would definetley check to see if his tummy is bloted and just keep in mind that it took 2 1/2 months of vomiting and me screaming at the MD's to find out what was wrong.

Shawna H. I see my 2 year old son's sinus's drain quite often. I'm going to try giving him that at night to see if I notice a difference.
