Two Year Old Keeps Waking in the Middle of the Night

My son will be two in another week and up until now has been a great sleeper. All of a sudden within the past two weeks or so he has been waking up at random times in the middle of the night screaming out for me. The first few nights I thought it was just a phase and it would pass, but now that it has been consistently happening for two weeks or so I am not so sure it is a phase. He isn't saying he is scared or in any pain when he wakes up so I don't know hot to handle this particular situation. Initially I would just go in his room and try to lay him back down and give him his blanket and pacifier. But that doesn't work most of the time. I usually have to hold him and rock him for about 15 - 20 minutes so he relaxes. Then I can lay him down and he goes right back to sleep. Do you think he can be having bad dreams at this age? Any input would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

My son didn't have night terrors... he just was getting up in the night for a while there... it lasted for a month or two, I think, and then stopped. We do have a nightlight in his room - but I think that came long after he stopped waking up and coming in to our room. You're doing well just comforting, calming and putting him back in bed... it takes patience, and seems like it will go on forever - don't worry, it won't. Good luck and good sleeping!

I would just let him cry it out. As long as yo know he is not sick, let him cry and he will stop waking up. I know it may sound harsh, but it works. You do not want him getting use to you comming in and helping him fall back to sleep. Good luck

I had the same problem with my son at that age - a little before he turned two. It went on for weeks we didn't know what to do - then a friend of mine who's son was 8 weeks younger than mine told me to leave a low wattage light on in his room. I started with a 40 watt bulb to see if it works and then I used a 15 watt bulb in his regular light and I still do it today. For some reason the dark makes them have the night terrors or show shadows on the walls which create the disorientation. Try it I hope it works.

My youngest went through this. Yes, it is a phase. It will last a bit longer than just a week or two. He is two and is discovering so much. He has excess energy. Talk to your ped and maybe he or she will have a suggestion. This is called Night terrors. the not knowing reality from a dream. Talk to your ped. He will know what to do.
