My daughter has had pimples (small with white puss)on only her cheeks ever since she was born. She has outgrown all allergies that she has and I still don't give her the dairy, but she still has acne. The doctor said I need to just clean her cheeks well and apply cetaphil moisturizer to her face...6months later no change. She eats a very healthy organic diet and since she has had allergies in the past I refrane from giving her any such foods that could be potential causes. I use no fragrance or dye laundry det and all natural fragrance-free baby products. Any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

I doubt it's actually acne, esp. since it hasn't changed. My son had "pilarus" (I think that's how you spell it) and it's very common. Please Google it. There is generally nothing you can do to actually get rid of it - they grow out of it. It's also common on the back of the upper arms, but my son did outgrow it.
Hope this helps.

If this has been on-going since birth,I'd take her to a dermatologist, He'd nip it in the bud.Only other thing I might try, is a mild wash for oily skin.neutrogena puts out some good products that are mild.I wish you and your darlin daughter the best

Personally, I don't think pediatricians know much about skin stuff. That has been my personal experience. But, I don't know where you live, but, UCI has a pediatric dermatoligist. Dr Metz. She is a woman, I think her 1st name is Brandy. My kids get weird skin things, and "it isn't contagious, it will go away on it's own" doesn't work for me any more. I am sure any dermatoligist would be better than the pediatrician.

It may not be acne; it could be Keratosis Pilaris which means that your daughter has a build up of keratin in her skin which results in hard white little bumps that look like acne. The little bumps are the waxy build up of keratin in the skin. My 16 month old son has it on one side of his face (in the cheek area) on his upper arms (both sides) and a little on his thighs. My son's pediatrician said it is a heriditary condition and there's no "cure" for it. All you can really do is keep the areas moisturized to keep the bumps soft, if in fact that is what your daughter has (only a qualified medical professional can tell you for sure.) I use Gerber's Grins and Giggles Moisturizing Stick on my son's face (it is safe to use on his face) and Aquaphor on his arms and legs to keep them extra moisturized. I have the same condition although mine is not as bad as my son's and the doctor said that as children grow, the condition can become lessened with time. I would ask your daughter's pediatrician for confirmation; it could be as simple as P.K. which is manageable. Good luck!

Obviously something is off balance in her little body, so if it was me, I'd approach it two ways: good nutriton (get help if needed), and then make sure the environment, including products, isn't affecting her.

Go to EWG.org and find the link on the bottom right for Costmetic Database. It will list the carcenogenic contents of the products often used, as well as recommend the safest ones. IT's a fabulous resource!

Doctors are funny, why do they think that putting something on the outside is going to cure acne??? It doesn't start on the outside.

Improper nutrition is one of the main cuauses of acne. Feed her the right nutrients and it should clear up. If you want to talk about what is right for her, contact me.

I don't know if you have tried marry kay products, (it's the only thing I use) but I spoke to someone about the moisturizers and sunscreen to make sure I can use it on my 1 year old's face - his skin is too sensitive to other sunscreens. It works great and doesn't clog his pores!

Hi E.,

Wow, I am so glad to see this post because you are not alone! My 2 1/2 year old son also gets acne on his face and it is driving me crazy. I've been blaming myself, that I'm not feeding him the right foods (he's super picky, so I tend to feed him whatever he'll eat, including chicken nuggets 7 meals in a row if he'll eat it, etc.) but I don't know what to do either.

Please email me if you take her to the dermatologist and let me know what they say. I may try to book an appointment wiht one too, I'm tempted to just take him to the pediatrician, but even though I LOVE his doctor, I have a feeling she'll just say, "yeah, some little pimples, nothing to worry about, just keep his skin clean." And that won't solve anything.

Keep me posted!

E.

Hey E.,

I just took my daughter (21 months) to the dermatologists on Saturday... he told me that babies do not have acne. I asked b/c my little one has had a red bump on her face for about 2 months now. My suggestions is to ask your pediatrician for a dermatologist recommendation. Ours is in Encino. If you would like his number or info just email me back. A dermatologists should be able to tell you whats going on and how to treat it.
Hope this helps.

Hi E.,
I have really educated myself on products for babies and I highly recommend the Arbonne Baby Products to use on your daughter. A lot of what we put on them contains harsh chemicals and mineral oil which can cause acne type breakouts. Just a suggestion and if you don't know anyone who sells Arbonne let me know and I can get it for you.

My daughter actually had been suffering from Dermatitis, which is a type of eczema and the ABC Baby Lotion from Arbonne has cleared it up. She was on a Steroid prior to that and I wasn't willing to keep that up.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, what a blessing!!!

A lot of times babies and kids get this from the chemicals in our cleaners including laundry soap. I would try using a more natural way to clean your laundry and wash your little one. I use Ecosence for cleaning and Koala pals for the kids. This has really helped. And when your new one arrives you will not have to buy special soap for the laundry you can use the same one for the entire family!
If you would like to learn more about these products please feel free to contact me!

E.,
My son has had the same thing since he was 2 days old. I used some of my mom's Arbonne face scrub and it worked wonders but is very expensive. Avenno isn't as good but a lot more affordable.
Keeping the skin moisturized is important because if the skin is dry it will try to secrete more oil and make it worse. Try to get lotions without mineral oil-not baby oil/ lotions. I use Trader Joes regular lotion-do not use the heavy moisturizer-and it works great.
His still comes back whenever we stop the scrub and he's 8 1/2 but atleast it is under control.

Hi E.,

I would put your sweet girl on fish oils. There is a great chewable fish oil that you can purchase a Henry's market or go on line to www.nordicnaturals.com they also have liquid form that taste like strawberry if she won't do the chewable. My 2.5 y/o calls them his gummie vitamins! It is called Children's DHA and it supports their whole body, it really is worth trying. Don't use any creams or acne washes, etc. she is still too young and you don't want to put those chemicals on her skin because they go right in to her system by soaking in to her skin. Also, son't use acne creams no matter how "gentle" they claim to be, often they have steroid agents and can scar.

Good luck!

There is a skin condition called ketosis pilaris that shows up on the upper arms, upper thighs and/or the face. It mimics acne, causing red bumps and occasional "whiteheads" caused by blockage of the hair follicles. My daughter has it on her arms. I had thought it was acne for months until we went to the pediatrician because it looks so similar! So I'd have a dermatologist check her out just in case, because the treatments are so different.

Good luck!

Hello, E.,

Thank you for your question.

Your daughter must have the flora in her system built back up. I have excellent foods that I use to regenerate the body with clients. I would be happy to share them with you.

Also, look into The Body Ecology site on line. Excellent information. Drop an email if you cannot locate it or would like me to forward the latest newsletter to you.

Check out also a book by Sally Fallon called, "Nourishing Traditions."

I have a recipe collection called, "88 Recipes That Heal". I would be happy to email it to you. These will be very useful, too.

Your daughter chose well!

My very best,

I have a 7 week old & at 2 weeks she started getting bumps on her face. The dr said it was baby acne. I then noticed it started to spread to the rest of her body. I stopeed using Johnson & Johnson products (lotion, soap, shampoo) & started usuing Aveeno for babies. Her skin has cleared up 100%. She was allergic to the fragrance. Grant it, her bumps did not have white puss though. If it's not allergies, I would try to see what she is laying her face on at home & any where else she goes (daycare). Make sure pillow cases and bed sheets are washed often. I would also make sure she is drinking water & eating right. Good luck!
