Tylonal PM and Breastfeeding?

Nope. You cant take it. Regular Tylanol ok, PM not ok.

Ingredients:

"Tylenol PM is comprised of 500 milligrams of the pain reliever acetaminophen and 25 milligrams of diphenhydramine HCl, the sleep aid. Acetaminophen is listed in the "American Family Physician" as a "recommended agent" for pain relief for mothers who are breastfeeding. Sedating antihistamines such as the diphenhydramine HCl in Tylenol PM are listed as an alternative medication choice, but are not on the list of safely recommended drugs."

I would worry about your supply decreasing with taking it, in addition.

It's essentially benadryl. Take a look at kellymom about that. It's now the suggestion that if it can be avoided, not to take these sedatives. It can cause the baby to be sedated and aspirate. I would think this is something to take up with your doctor and pharmacist, not us. The reason I mentioned it drying your supply, is I have known to people who took it specifically to stop producing milk.

Tylenol PM is just Tylenol & Benedryl.

2 of the only meds safe to give an infant even if they don't need it. So typically, if you ask your pharmacist or Ped, they say that you can absolutely take Tylenol & Benedryl while nursing. It's also one of the few allergy meds that those with bad allergies can take while nursing.

I'm not a doc or pharm, though, & don't know your history even if I were. IN GENERAL? Totally safe / fine. But always best to check with your providers who know you and your history.

Can you breastfeed her and then take it? Does she still get up to nurse?

I was told it is fine. Just take it after your DD's last nursing session of the night. You can call a 24 hour pharmacy if you want to be sure though!

I use Advil PMs every night when I go to bed and the Dr told me that it is just fine. If you still have concerns, call the pediatrician. :-)

This is my favorite site to look up the safety of medications etc during breastfeeding.

It's just Tylenol with Benadryl in it really. There is some evidence that it messes with your supply and others suggest it can sedate the baby as well even in breast milk. It's half life isn't that long though. If your baby is nursing every few hours I wouldn't take it... If it's more than every 4 you pry can. Like I said the half life is short.

But my baby was born with CHD and he was allowed to take that for colds, sedation even before scans they'd use it on him even when he was pry 2 months old. It did the trick. They wouldn't have to put him out for scans and echos and such.

So as long as I wasn't going to take it then nurse . . . I'd take it. It's one of the few meds they always let me give even my son with CHD.
